Affordable Housing 2023

January kicks off the State’s annual affordable housing 9% Tax Credit Program, housing developers looking to bring workforce apartment developments into eligible neighborhoods may be reaching out to civic organizations and my office to share information about their plans. Further information about the tax credit programs is available here. In addition, each application Council Member Cisneros receives pertaining to District H will be posted on the District H webpage for your reference.

Recycle Your Christmas Tree!

The City Solid Waste Department has opened 24 residential Christmas tree drop-off recycling locations throughout Houston through Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

Houston Fire Department wants to remind everyone about the dangers of the dried out Christmas Trees and easy it is to catch fire by giving a demonstration Thurs, Jan. 5th, 10:00am. RSVP by 8am by emailing martee.black@houstontx.gov

45th Annual MLK Jr. Parade and Festival

The Black Heritage Society has asked Mayor Turner to serve as this year’s grand marshal at the MLK Jr. Parade. Join the Mayor and fellow Houstonians in celebration of one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement. More information here

 With thousands of runners and spectators, it is the largest single day sporting event in the city. It is run concurrently with a half marathon and a 5 km race. For more information and if interested register here!

Search For Houston's Next Poet Laureate

The role of the Houston poet laureate is to stimulate poetic impulse, foster appreciation of poetry in all its forms, and serve Houston residents and visitors with expressions of culture through words. The poet laureate will receive an honorarium of $20,000 through the City Initiative Grant Program of the City of Houston and serve from April 2023 through April 2025. For more information view here

Help prevent sanitary sewer overflows by remembering to throw grease away!

  1. Pour fats, oils, and grease into a safe container
  2. Cool in fridge
  3. Toss in the trash

Remember to only flush the 3 P's: Pee, Poo, and (Toliet) Paper!

Health Department Updates on COVID, Monkey Pox, and Flu

COVID-19

Houston's latest 14-day average COVID-19 positivity rate is 13.7%. Houston's CDC COVID-19 Community Level is currently LOW. The following is still recommended:


Monkey Pox

As of Tuesday, January 3rd, there are 714 confirmed Monkey Pox cases in Houston. The threat remains low. However, it is still recommended to take precautions and be aware of symptoms and the next steps. 

  • Rash may appear and can be extremely painful
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • People who develop a rash need to avoid direct contact with other people and contact their healthcare provider as soon as possible.

Flu

The Houston Health Department encourages everyone ages six months and older to protect themselves, their family, and community by getting a flu shot now. People can receive flu and COVID-19 vaccines at the same time—in different arms—during a visit to their medical provider.
