Did You Know?

Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September.

It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and President Grover Cleveland signed Labor Day into national holiday status in 1894. However, workers didn't really reap its

benefits until 1916 when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Adamson Act. According to the National Employment Law Project, the Adamson Act officially made an eight-hour workday the legal standard.

COMMUNITY NEWS

2022 WCA Member Survey

Surveys have been mailed - be on the lookout for your copy. This year's survey is designed to focus on the Woodlake community’s demographic information.

Your input and feedback are important because this information will help the Association set the community’s priorities for programming and budgeting. As such, it is critical that we get as many members as possible to participate in the survey.

Use the mailed information to access the survey online. If you choose to complete the paper copy of the survey, you may either mail it back to the WCA or drop it off at the office: 14900 Lake Bluff Parkway, Midlothian, Virginia 23112.

Geese Deterrents in Place

There are two plastic coyotes in place at the AFC to encourage geese to find other places to gather. These decoys are currently located at the fountain and near the basketball courts (see photo here).

At first glance you may mistake them for a live animal, as they are very life-like, however, they are replicas and tethered to the ground. The geese population and the waste they leave behind has created a lot of significant problems. We have been forced to shut down the fountain several times for cleaning and have spent time in other areas cleaning up where geese have made their presence "known".

The coyote decoys are one of a number of tools we plan to use to deter the geese. You may alos see the coyote decoys installed at other locations based on movements of geese.

Please Don't Feed The Geese

One of the biggest causes of goose overpopulation is people feeding the geese. Areas known for handouts will see a few geese increase to 100-fold over time. This seemingly generous act is actually harmful to the animals. Aside from the health of the animals, the health of the lakes and ponds can be severely affected by goose overpopulation.

Feeding the geese only makes the population problem get worse each and every year until one reaches the point that we have to pay the federal govt to come in and round them up. We want to avoid having to take that action at all possible costs. So please do your part and do not provide the geese with a food source.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY

Community Facility Bond Plan - Community Meeting

Learn more about the Community Facilities Bond Plan Tuesday, September 6 at the Chesterfield Technical Center on Hull Street. This will be a joint meeting with Board of Supervisor and School Board members. Meeting begins at 6 p.m.

Quick Summary: Chesterfield County is requesting a bond referendum (election) for Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022. A bond referendum is a vital component of the local democratic process in which citizens vote on the financing of the county’s long range capital plan. Voters will consider one question to approve key projects for schools, public safety, libraries and parks. An affirmative vote grants the county authority to issue general obligation (GO) bonds to finance a finite list of projects. The total amount of the bonds for which voter approval is sought is $540 million, including $375 million for school facilities and $165 million for other county facilities (public safety, libraries and parks).

Fall Food Drive for Local Food Pantries

Dates: September 1 - 17, 2022

Woodlake United Methodist Church (UMC) is sponsoring a Fall Food Drive to collect nonperishable foods to restock the shelves of the Belmont Food Pantry, administered by Belmont Community Resource Services (BCRS). The Belmont Food Pantry, a FeedMore partner, has served the south Richmond and eastern Chesterfield County areas since 2004. They currently provide fresh and nonperishable foods to 350 to over 400 families every week. These numbers have grown steadily in recent months, as families struggle with increased cost of food, housing, and transportation. To serve so many families in need of food, the pantry depends heavily on community donations. Woodlake UMC partners with BCRS to support this important work to reduce hunger in our local communities.
