Our Greatest Fear

From Pastor Michael Bush

Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell to his knees before Jesus. "Master, leave. I'm a sinner and can't handle this overwhelming goodness. Leave me to myself." When they pulled in that catch of fish, awe overwhelmed Simon and everyone with him. It was the same with James and John, Zebedee's sons, coworkers with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people." They pulled their boats up on the beach, left them, nets and all, and followed him.

--Luke 5:8-11

On Sunday, I invited us to imagine Jesus calling us to follow him, meaning that Jesus believes we can be like him, to be part of what God is doing in the world. And as we hear this, resistance might arise. On some level we may fear that we are not good enough or that the light we are called to shine is just too much for us. Sometimes this fear manifests as boredom and distraction. We get lulled back into unawake life of getting by, just eating, sleeping, getting the task list done and more. But then we miss out on receiving the brilliance that is our birthright and shining the light that the world needs.

Like Peter and Isaiah in our stories from Sunday, when that “not-good-enough” voice arises, we can engage the spiritual practice of not giving into it. Instead, we name this fear to God in prayer and to other trusted people. In this we make room to hear the truth -- that we are not only good enough to be loved and healed and whole, but we are good enough to take such bright beautiful gifts out into the world!

I share again Sunday’s reading from Marianne Williamson's A Return to Love

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness

That most frightens us.

We ask ourselves

Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.

Your playing small

Does not serve the world.

There's nothing enlightened about shrinking

So that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine,

As children do.

We were born to make manifest

The glory of God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us;

It's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine,

We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we're liberated from our own fear,

Our presence . . . . liberates others.

Love,

Pastor Michael Bush

Better Stories

February 16 and 23 with Michael Bush

The stories we hear and tell inform and shape the stories we live and create. Last week we considered some of the stories we have heard about our world (might makes right, survival of the fittest, other conventional wisdom) and stories we have heard about ourselves (what did you hear from parents? Peers? Religious leaders?). This Sunday we will look at stories told by those seeking divine purpose in our Scriptural and faith tradition. How do the God stories differ from the conventional wisdom?

Finally, we will explore ways we can both tell and live into better stories, ones that are life-giving for us and for those around us. How do we speak and live into stories of compassion, healing, justice, and love?

Pastor Michael will share some readings and videos ahead of time in preparation for the sessions, so please sign up if you plan to attend any of these Sunday mornings so that you will receive the materials. When you sign up, please indicate if you plan to be in person or on Zoom (and a Zoom link will be sent to you). Sign up by clicking here.

Are There Women Who Have HIV?

YES, 24% of the CarePartners TIHAN serves are women. This is what Sherri, one of those CarePartners said, "Before I found out about TIHAN, I didn't realize that so much help and kindness and generosity existed in this town. I really didn't realize that. When I found TIHAN, it was the greatest hope I had found in years."

Thank you for showing that generosity by bringing CarePackage items Sunday and almost filling 2 BINS! Now we only need 64 dental flosses (55 yards is good.), 33 deodorants, and 47 cube shaped boxes of Kleenex (or some other brand) tissues. Sunday is the LAST day to bring these items. Please show that Sherri is right by filling those bins.

Please add a few of them to your shopping list. You may bring them to the church the first three Sundays in February. If you prefer that we shop for you, please donate to the church by sending a check with POZ Café in the memo or click here for online and add POZ Café in the memo there.

Other questions, see Jane Pendley.

Thank you for generously showing God's love for these CarePartners.
