Any new construction project on a college or university campus is a major financial investment, and it is in the institution’s best interest to design a new facility to be flexible to allow for its fullest use and to maximize fiscal investment, say the design experts at KWK Architects. This certainly holds true for new residence halls; while their primary mode may be living quarters for students during the academic school year, their secondary mode and equally important use is during the summer months when they often house non-academic groups such as sports camps or conference groups. With informed planning, a new residence hall can be a multi-mode facility and be used successfully for both the traditional academic-year use as a dorm and for short-term summer stays, points out KWK Architects.

The Associated Air Balance Council (AABC) Commissioning Group (ACG) recently announced the release of the ACG Building Systems Commissioning Guideline. The new digital publication, organized by specific types of building systems, offers insight and strategies from experienced commissioning providers on a variety of topics, and is designed to help providers execute the ASHRAE Standard 202 commissioning process effectively and efficiently — while overcoming common challenges encountered in both design and field settings. Jim Magee, CxA, EMP, ACG Guideline Committee chair, pointed out, "The ACG Building Systems Commissioning Guideline is a major leap forward, not only in its depth and breadth of information, but also in offering providers actionable guidance on implementation."

The air-powered AWT-100X Tube Cleaner is our most powerful unit to clean tubes or pipes of heavy deposits quickly. Use in wet or dry cleaning applications for boilers or with the integrated water flush for chillers, heat exchangers, or transfer piping. This versatile unit uses a cleaning tool mounted to the tip of a flexible shaft. For wet applications, the unit feeds water through the casing to the cleaning tool, flushing out deposits as they are loosened.

For dry applications, the GTC-DPA Dry Pickup Attachment and a simultaneous vacuum are used to remove loosened deposits. The AWT-100X is air powered and features stainless steel construction, foot switch activation for safe operation, is easy to move around, and easy to operate.

U.S. General Services Administrator Robin Carnahan recently visited Ann Arbor, Michigan, to discuss GSA and Biden-Harris Administration efforts to electrify the federal fleet and to announce a new “one-stop-shop” for procurement of goods and services to make it easier for federal agencies to purchase zero-emission vehicles and install electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.

In a roundtable meeting with auto manufacturers, as well as utility and union representatives at the University of Michigan’s Mcity Test Facility, the Administrator discussed how GSA is helping transition the federal fleet to 100% electric by obtaining the necessary infrastructure, including charging stations, for federal facilities. GSA aims to simplify the process for other federal agencies through specialized acquisition resources to guide the process from start to finish.

The responsibilities of facility managers have been growing and evolving rapidly. With its global study, the 2022 FM Training Outlook Survey, the Professional Facility Management Institute (ProFMI) explored the need for FM training and credentials from both the management and staff points of view.

When it comes to addressing the FM skills gap, ProFMI identified 24 cross-functional competencies and FM knowledge areas required of FMs today. Many of these skills can be developed over time with on-the-job experience, but as the need for job-ready FMs grows, time is a limiting factor. Benchmarking existing knowledge and filling the gaps with training is an efficient path to a skilled workforce.

The design intent behind LimeLite seating was to create a seating line that addressed the three main reasons KI clients specify and purchase stack seating:

  1. Architectural-inspired design aesthetics
  2. Ergonomic comfort
  3. Comprehensive offering to address any application

LimeLite seating, winner of the Best of NeoCon 2022 Silver Award for stacking seating, offers an elevated aesthetic with its slim, contoured profile. Comfort is derived from an inherent flexing shell made possible through the architecture of the shell and use of select materials. The comprehensive collection includes stack, task, nesting and high-density chairs at an appealing price point and supports cohesive design throughout a space in a variety of applications.

Facility managers will be walking the line when they reach Nashville to attend World Workplace® 2022, Sept. 28-30. The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) has chosen “Take Center Stage” as the conference theme in recognition of the changing role of FMs in the workplace arena. “As the curtain lifts on FM’s shift from purely operational to indispensably strategic, there’s no business like know business,” says IFMA. “Get your act together – this year’s marquee FM event in Music City Center will prepare you to take center stage in making the spaces you manage your tour de force.”

World Workplace is the largest facility management conference in the world, offering discussions and sessions on FM and the wider built environment since 1995. World Workplace offers sessions in tracks, introducing “Emerging Topics” that consist of new or evolving business functions, external influences, or mandates that have a high probability of impacting the FM profession in terms of roles, responsibilities, and skills and knowledge requirements. The other tracks are FM Solutions; Finance & Business; Leadership & Strategy; Operations & Maintenance; Project Management; Risk Management; Facility Information Management & Technology Management; Occupancy & Human Factors; Performance & Human Factors. Sustainability; and Workplace Evolutionaries.

New capacity for generating electricity from solar, wind and other renewables increased to a record level worldwide in 2021 and will grow further this year as governments increasingly seek to take advantage of renewable power’s energy security and climate benefits, according to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) latest Renewable Energy Market Update.

The world added a record 295 gigawatts of new renewable power capacity in 2021, overcoming supply chain challenges, construction delays and high raw material prices, according to the report. Global capacity additions are expected to rise this year to 320 gigawatts — equivalent to an amount that would come close to meeting the entire electricity demand of Germany or matching the European Union’s (EU) total electricity generation from natural gas. Solar photovoltaic (PV) power is on course to account for 60% of global renewable power growth in 2022, followed by wind and hydropower.

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) recently announced its new Mold Uncovered campaign. The campaign emphasizes the importance of proper mold remediation in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings through accredited industry standards and certifications.

Mold is a pervasive yet largely unregulated issue in the U.S. and worldwide, says IICRC. Left unchecked, mold issues in indoor environments can have significant, lasting health impacts. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the rise in extreme weather conditions associated with climate change have led and will continue to lead to more growth of indoor fungi and mold. Moreover, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mold exposure can lead to upper respiratory issues, especially among children and those with immune suppression or respiratory issues.
