It has been quite a summer so far! In June we had a fascinating visit from Professor Jon Caris, just this past weekend we welcomed our newly matriculating Smithies into the fold at our annual Summer Tea, and every month our Smith College Club of the Peninsula Book Club gets together.

As ever, members get a proactive Evite to all club events -- become a member to ensure that you never miss out on one of these fun gatherings!

HEY YOU! we are looking for additional people to make our board more robust. SUMMER TEA, Welcoming New Students - Sunday, July 23

It's the most wonderful time of the year! We had a delightful event at the home of Joy Silver '96 (THANK YOU, JOY), welcoming many of our newly matriculating Smithies and catching up with a few current Smithies who are in the area for the Summer. Every year this event is such a special moment for the new students to experience a taste of the lasting connection that Smith offers, and for alums to meet these promising, brilliant young people at the beginning of their Smith journey.

FACULTY SPEAKER - Saturday, June 17

Professor Jon Caris, Director of the Smith College Spatial Analysis Lab, presented to a group of local Peninsula Bay Area alums and their guests us at Channing House in Palo Alto, educating us on his work in drones, the history of drone usage at Smith College and throughout the world, and developing a drone code of ethics at Smith. It was an incredibly interesting afternoon. A special thank you to club member Alice Smith for sponsoring us at Channing House and helping coordinate the refreshments and the accommodations for Professor Caris.

BOOK CLUB - Wednesday, June 21

Eight of us held a lengthy discussion of Octavia E. Butler’s “Kindred” on Wednesday the 21st. Many thanks to Diana McDonough for hosting us. We were critical of the author’s writing—it seemed unsophisticated, with no memorable passages—but the overall effect was engrossing; most of us found it a page-turner. We were impressed by the range of themes, especially the violence, both physical and psychological, of slavery; the insidious ease of acclimatization to and acceptance of a changed situation; and an array of moral dilemmas with no easy answers.

Upcoming books:

  • August 9: Annual Movie Night and potluck: “All the King’s Men” by Robert Penn Warren
  • September 20: "These Precious Days" by Ann Patchett

If you're interested in joining the conversation this month, please contact the Book Club Coordinator Sally Smith '64 via email.
