LINK TO HOPE NEWSLETTER
Kentucky CancerLink is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce and/or eliminate barriers to screening, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. We work alongside Kentuckians in need of life-saving cancer screenings or in need of support while on a cancer journey. We strive to be a link to hope...
Greetings from the Executive Director:
"September tries its best to have us forget summer" - Bernard Williams

Hi Friends,

I can't even express how fast August went by, I know many of you feel the same. With kids getting back into school, PTSA and Marching Band booster meetings starting back up these last few weeks have been a blur. September is here but I sure don't want to forget about summer!

Our KCL team is hard at work serving Kentuckians that need cancer screenings and cannot afford them or helping those on a cancer journey receive the support that they need to be successful with treatment.

Read ahead to learn more about how you can get involved in our upcoming Links to Hope Golf Scramble at Keene Trace Golf Club, meet a board member, and see how we've collaborated with several partners for fundraising and outreach/education about KCL programs.

As we continue into September, please remember our fellow Kentuckians managing devastating conditions as they work to rebuild.

Be safe and take care of each other. Thank you for staying engaged with Kentucky CancerLink as we work to be a link to hope to Kentuckians on a cancer journey.

Cheers!

Melissa Karrer
Board Member Spotlight - Sally Rober
Sally joined our board in 2019 with the hopes of helping the cancer community in Kentucky in any way possible.

Sally was diagnosed in 2018 with breast cancer and found, not only, great physician care here in Central Kentucky but local support from Kentucky CancerLink as well.

“The support from this organization helped me mentally, physically, and even spiritually. I knew that when I healed I wanted to be part of the healing for those that needed this kind of support.
Kentucky Cancer Link is a growing organization that welcomes all walks of life to be supported in their cancer journey. Innovative ways of navigating prevention and treatment is the primary focus. What a privilege it is for me to be a part of this developing organization. It feels good to give back.”

Sally stays healthy with tennis and pickleball. She and her husband Paul have 5 children and 7 grandchildren. They look forward to traveling in an RV once Paul retires.

Out and About
Syrena, KCL's Program Assistant, attended a cut flower workshop on August 11th at Daycrest Farm in Garrard county to benefit KCL. The fundraiser was organized by one of our amazing partners, Blue Grass Energy.

The weather was lovely and to make the evening more memorable, participants were able to watch the super moon rise above the sunflowers. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Melanie attended the Midsummer Night's Run in downtown Lexington on August 13, in collaboration with the team at CHI Saint Joseph Healthcare Lexington, one of our fabulous partners.

It was a great opportunity to educate the community on the importance of early detection & offer at-home colon cancer screening kits as well.
Melanie teamed up with staff from Harrison Memorial Hospital and KCP East to provide at-home colon cancer screening kits to employees at Bullard in Cynthiana on August 24.

We were able to provide kits to 16 individuals who have never been screened and/or who were past due for screening.
Melissa & Melanie joined Kristen Kennedy at WKYT for the morning show on August 29th to talk about our upcoming Links to Hope golf scramble.

Check out the link below to view the segment.

Melanie and Melissa joined a Saint Elizabeth HealthCare Occupational Therapist/ Lymphedema Therapist for a presentation about lymphedema and assistance with compression garments for Kentucky residents.

Thank you for the invitation to speak to your group! We love our northern Kentucky partners!

Under the new lung cancer screening guidelines, those ages 50-80 who have a 20 pack-year smoking history or who have quit smoking in the past 15 years should get screened for lung cancer. Under the new guidelines, more women, Black and Latino individuals are considered at high risk.
