Giovanna Falcon

Temporary Administrative Assistant, Office of Community, Outreach & Engagement

gfalcon1@hs.uci.edu | 714-456-5408

Giovanna holds over 6 years of experience in various administrative capacities, including her recent position as the Executive Assistant to the Dean and Head of Curtin Law School at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. In this role, she was the first point of contact and provided extensive support for both academic and legal events, handled a high volume of logistics and travel requests, and acted as the Executive Officer for the CLS External Advisory Board and assisted operations in the John Curtin Law Clinic, which provides legal advice and assistance to members of the community who could not afford to obtain paid legal assistance. Please join us in welcoming Giovanna to our team!

Helen Tam

Clinical Research Coordinator, Breast Team/Team I

htam4@hs.uci.edu | 714-456-6907

Helen has a BS in Health Science from CSDH. She brings 13+ years of oncology research coordination experience from a private oncology practice and from Providence Medical Foundation. She has experience with coordinating various oncology disease sites—from solid to liquid tumors—such as pre-screening, eligibility reviews, consenting, preparing for monitoring visits, and data entry. Helen also has worked on Epic Beacon builds and study startup tasks. Since she joined our unit earlier this month, she has been assisting with pre-screening, contacting patients, and getting acquainted with the studies she will be taking over. Welcome, Helen!

Alice Ting

Clinical Research Coordinator, Team B - Hematology

yunpeit@hs.uci.edu | 714-509-2414

Since joining the CTU in 2022 as an Assistant Research Data Coordinator, Alice has consistently demonstrated exceptional teamwork, a positive attitude, and a readiness to embrace new challenges. She has taken to learning multiple new disease processes very quickly, leveraging her clinical background in pharmacy. Most recently, she has taken the initiative to serve as a trusted primary contact/liaison for our pharmaceutical trial sponsors to address studies with many patients as well as patients with complex treatment journeys. Her ability to handle complex data requests with both tact and efficiency has not only enhanced our operations as a team; it has tremendous value in strengthening our continued relationships with these sponsors. Congratulations on your new position, Alice!

Announcements

UC Pancreatic Cancer Consortium receives $1 million gift to support early detection

The UC Pancreatic Cancer Consortium is delighted to announce a $1 million gift from the Bern Schwartz Family Fund at Vanguard Charitable to support a UC-wide 5-year program. The donor's advised fund is named in honor of Bern Schwartz (1914-1978) an American businessman and portrait photographer.

The award will focus on three main areas:

  • Building a UC-wide biobank of samples from patients with early-stage pancreatic cancer and using these to validate novel blood-based early detection tests
  • Enhancing standard screening with AI-driven MRI for groups at high risk of developing pancreatic cancer
  • Supporting discovery of new early detection tests for pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is currently the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the USA and is on target to become the second leading cause by the end of the decade. The 5-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with disease localized to the pancreas is 44%, but for those patients diagnosed once the cancer has spread throughout the body it is just 3%. Early detection is likely to have the biggest impact on survival.

The UC Pancreatic Cancer Consortium consists of interdisciplinary scientists from the five UC Comprehensive Cancer Centers, working together to improve care and increase the cure rate for patients with pancreatic cancer.
