THE SHORT REPORT

Hi Everyone,

Happy September! I hope you all had some time away from work over the summer to take care of yourselves and be with family and loved ones. Our wellness is a critical success factor for taking good care of our patients and learners. The Department will continue to work with Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine, NSH and Doctors NS to provide supports and opportunities for our wellness. A great example of this is the Faculty of Medicine’s new peer support program for Residents. See our wellness section below for other great links.

It has been five years since I started my journey as Department Head with all of you. I can’t believe how fast this time has gone by, although, to some of you, it may seem like a really long time! 😊. I have always been firm in my belief that we are an amazing DoM with so many dedicated and talented people. I see examples that reinforce this belief every day. Over the last year my Dad had a few health issues and I had the opportunity to experience the knowledge and compassion of several of our department members first hand. Thank you. I am truly grateful for all that you do every day; whether it is caring for the patients we serve, or advancing care through our teaching, quality work, and research.

We recognize a number of special days in September. As we continue to work on elevating equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in our department, perhaps one of the most important days is September 30: Orange Shirt Day, now officially our National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. This is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day that honours Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwepemc (Shuswsap) from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation, whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day of school. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations. Bill C-5 received Royal Assent on June 3, 2021 marking the new holiday, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Please make sure to wear you orange on the 30th and think of the ways you can make our community kinder and more accepting to all.

In September, we always welcome new members to our department, including our new class of residents and the many recruits who start over the summer months. Please see the complete list below and give them a warm welcome when you cross paths.

Enjoy all the great content of our newsletter and don’t forget to send us your story ideas.

Take care,

Christine

A warm welcome to Dr. Mary Ellen Macdonald who joined the Department of Medicine and the Division of Palliative Medicine on September 1, 2022.

Dr. Macdonald is the newly appointed J & W Murphy Foundation Endowed Chair in Palliative Care. Previously based in Montreal, Dr. Macdonald was the Program Head of Pediatric Palliative Care Research at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and Chair of the McGill Qualitative Health Research Group.

Dr. Macdonald is a medical anthropologist who has been researching death, dying and bereavement for two decades. She is currently drawing on her training in public health to advance a community-based approach to palliative care, including through her concept of ‘Grief Literacy.’ Her main research approaches include participatory qualitative and mixed methods methodologies.

Dr. Mary Ellen Macdonald appointed J & W Murphy Foundation Endowed Chair in Palliative Care

More than just end of life care and pain management, palliative care can often be the forgotten or misunderstood tool in the healthcare system. As our province faces an aging population and the country's highest cancer rates, and with grief amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Mary Ellen Macdonald, the newly appointed J & W Murphy Foundation Endowed Chair in Palliative Care, has a simple message.
