St. Crispin's Conference Center and Camp

Newsletter October/November 2023

Welcome to Trueman and Wendy Hoffmeister as they come to St. Crispin's!

Dear Friends of St. Crispin's Conference Center and Camp,

Hi! I'm Trueman Hoffmeister and I will become the new Executive Director in early December. My wife, Wendy and I are currently in final preparations for our move to Oklahoma from Wisconsin. As I write this note, it is 12 degrees and we have about 3" of fresh snow on the ground. We are definitely eager to experience the much milder winter at St. Crispin's!

Last week was Thanksgiving, and we reflected about all the blessings in our life. As we have looked back over our careers in conference, camping and education, it became clear that we were being prepared to accept this position, and know we are becoming a part of a very special place.

We are also extremely grateful to Alton and Joy for their leadership and guidance in preparing St. Crispin's for this next phase of delivering hospitality, nourishment, and growth to all we serve. Wendy and I look forward to meeting all of you and learning about your experiences and connections to St. Crispin's. Hope to see you at camp!

Together in the Walk,

Trueman and Wendy Hoffmeister

“Keep watch, dear Lord, over those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, and shield the joyous.; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.”

Book of Common Prayer, p. 134

What does it mean to ‘Shield the Joyous’?

To shield the joyous is to keep them lifted up in prayer so that they might be able to remain in the midst of their joy, rather that experiencing the harmful effects of evil in the world. Of course, we all eventually must experience hardships, yet, this prayer asks God to allow for those in the midst of joy to remain there, at least for a while longer.

When we think of the joyous, we think of our children, first. We love to see them run and play in safe spaces, enjoying God’s creation and one another in fellowship. Then, we think of those thin spaces in which they reach out and touch the face of God. Many of these people have found those moments to occur on these holy grounds of St. Crispin’s. So, how can we ensure a safer environment?

By adding a security gate, we will be able to protect our kids, the guests of St. Crispin’s, and the staff from potential harm. Please donate to the safety and security of the joyous; your gift will help ensure that our beloved guests and campers will be given an added measure of solace each night while they sleep, thus giving rest to the weary while also doing that which we long for in our prayers…

…to shield the joyous, all for God’s love’s sake.

We are almost halfway to our goal!

Will you be a Shepherd at the Gate?

The goal is to raise $30,000 to install an automated security gate with keypad entry and security cameras.

There will be more information and an opportunity to give

towards this need at the Convention this weekend!

St. Crispin's Summer Camp

As the saying goes, St. Crispin's is a thin place. A special place, where the distance between heaven and earth gets just a bit smaller. At St. Crispin's we ground ourselves in our Rule of Life, which teaches us how to live in Christian community. St. Crispin's is an inclusive camp where we strive to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of all. Campers leave St. Crispin's forever changed by the beauty, joy, and friendships found here.
