Harnessing Heartfelt Connections: My Experience at the ACHE South Conference
By Patti Spaniola, ACHE President
In today's fast-paced world, the value of face-to-face gatherings cannot be overstated. Conferences stand as powerful platforms where ideas collide, innovation flourishes, and meaningful connections are forged. Recently, I had the privilege of attending the ACHE South Conference in Gulfport, Mississippi. The experience left an indelible mark on both my professional and personal journey.
From the moment I entered the hotel, I saw friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. It truly was like attending a family reunion! As I greeted everyone, I turned to someone I thought was with ACHE and welcomed her warmly. She admitted that she wasn’t with our conference, but was sticking around because she enjoyed watching us and experiencing our energy. That is proof that we make a difference just by coming together!
As the conference began, we had the opportunity to engage with colleagues who understand each other with no explanation. Listening to keynote speakers and panelists share their experiences and vision ignited a renewed sense of purpose within me. Their stories of creating new opportunities for students and effecting change served as reminders of the powerful work we do to change the lives of our students, our community partners, our institutions and ourselves.
The interactive workshops provided a fertile ground for collaborative learning and brainstorming. Whether delving into emerging trends, tackling pressing issues or reflecting on our work, these sessions fostered a spirit of camaraderie and mutual support. It was truly invigorating to exchange ideas with peers who shared my passion and drive, each conversation sparking new insights and avenues for exploration.
After a day of reveling in that camaraderie, I noticed that there was a deep bench of ACHE South leadership in attendance as there were 11 past South Chairs there to support new leaders. Not only was it meaningful and inspirational, it warmed my heart and made me grow even more fond of ACHE and my dear colleagues.
Our new leaders were excited to engage and volunteer to serve on ACHE committees. For us to work together in an atmosphere of growth, trying out innovative ideas while learning new skills in a safe environment is the true value of ACHE. It’s why we return to each other and the organization.
My heartfelt thanks to the South Leadership, Delta State University as the host institution, and all who made this conference a resounding success. I look forward to working with each of you to come together to share our stories, laugh, enjoy each other’s company and shape a brighter future for generations to come.
