A Quid Pro Quo that won't cost you much
I have been emboldened. A few weeks ago I went out on a limb and featured an iconic Portuguese wine in this space, the 2017 Prats & Symington Chryseia. As I noted in the email, Portuguese wines are a hard sell in the U.S. despite their high quality-to-price ratio. To my delight, the wine sold out. Not a week later, another Portuguese offer crossed my desk that was just too enticing to pass up.

Other than exceptional quality, the 2019 Casa Santos Lima Quid Pro Quo has little in common with the high-end Chryseia. Most notably, the price is far less. The Quid Pro Quo, rated 92 points by Decanter and 90 points by Wine Enthusiast, exemplifies the remarkable values to be had among inexpensive wines from Portugal. With prices continually on the increase, we're finding it challenging to find quality at the very low end of the price spectrum. At $7.33 a bottle when you purchase a case, it doesn't get much better than this full-bodied, structured red from one of the country's most awarded wineries.

Based about 25 miles north of Lisbon, Casa Santos Lima has been owned by the same family for four generations, but it's no boutique operation. It has a large and diverse portfolio that spans five differerent regions and includes reds, whites, rosés, sparkling wines and dessert wines. A major exporter, Casa Santos Lima is responsible for the production of around 40% of all the fine wine from the area around Lisbon.

Unlike the more Old-World-leaning Chryseia, the Quid Pro Quo is a modern wine, emphasizing focused, tightly packed ripe black fruit on a full-bodied frame. The nose exudes blackberries, boysenberries and violets with a faint note of wild game. Juicy acidity keeps it tasting fresh despite its considerable weight. This will be a welcome accompaniment for hearty winter dishes, but I urge you to buy enough to last into grilling season. The Quid Pro Quo is an ideal match for burgers, steaks and chops.cooked over fire.

Fortunately, stocking up is easy when 12 bottles will set you back only $88. That's less than half the regular retail price of $15.99 a bottle. Click here to purchase Best Case Scenario #330.
