November Students of the Month

GRACE MUNRO

CLASS OF 2024

Senior, Grace Munro is Historian for the Class of 2024. Grace is President of English Honor Society, President of Habitat for Humanity, and is a member of National, Rho Kappa, and Science Honor Societies. She is a four-year member of Key Club, tutors in Biology and Chemistry, has previously played Basketball and Tennis, and is now manager for the Lady Lions Basketball team. Grace’s favorite classes at North have been AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and English III Honors. She felt very connected with and listened to by her teachers, Mrs. Flynn, Dr. Wilhelm, and Ms. Fedorko. They were always interested in what she had to say. These teachers continue to be amazing motivators and Grace knows she can go to any of them with anything she needs help with. The other students in each of these classes were amazing and she continues to keep in touch with these groups. They really made each class feel like a family. Outside of North, Grace is a hostess at Ironbound Farm and babysits. She reads with young kids at the Clinton Library as a Reading Buddy and built Books for Children at the Midland School in Branchburg with cortical visual impairment. Grace has applied to several schools including the University of Michigan, the University of Virginia, Northwestern University, and Barnard College. She plans to major in both Cellular, Molecular, and Developmental Biology along with Comparative Literature. Grace’s fondest memories at North are the "fun" basketball practices, Junior Prom, Senior Homecoming, making crystal Christmas ornaments in AP Chemistry, playing snake.io with the other sophomores in AP Bio, Mrs. Flynn's pizza party, the Anatomy study group with Ana and Erin, commandeering the Guidance conference room with the other class officers, and doing Buzzfeed quizzes with Mr. Gallo in Honors Precalculus. Her time at North so far has been stressful, yet so fun, and she is very grateful for all her friends and teachers who helped her along the way.

SOPHIA ZAPPETTI

CLASS OF 2024

Senior, Sophia Zappetti is Secretary for the Class of 2024. Sophia plays on the Varsity Soccer and Varsity Basketball teams. She is a member of National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Science Honor Society, English Honor Society, and Math Honor Society (which she is Co-President of). Sophia is on the executive board for Diversity Club, is the President of Students for Change, and participates in Model UN. Sophia says her favorite classes at North Hunterdon have been AP Chemistry and AP Seminar. She enjoyed the material taught in both classes and liked both teachers. The labs in AP Chemistry were always fun and interesting and she loved the freedom she had in AP Seminar to choose what was being researched. Sophia’s favorite North memories were going to football games with friends and spending time with the soccer and basketball teams. She says her time at North has been full of ups and downs with stress, but with all of her friends, fun events, activities, and supporting teachers, all of the hard work has been worth it. Outside of North, Sophia plays club soccer for Steel United, and this past summer she conducted research in Chemistry at Boston University’s RISE program. She is currently undecided where she will attend college next year, but some of her favorite schools are on the East Coast and California.

November Athletes of the Month

SARALYN FREDERICK

CLASS OF 2024

Senior Saralyn Frederick is a long distance runner for North Hunterdon. Saralyn competes year-round, but her favorite season is Cross Country. She loves running the 5k and the 2 mile in both Winter and Spring Track. The team just won their ninth consecutive sectional title. Four of those titles she has contributed to as a varsity athlete. They placed second in the Group Championship and Saralyn placed tenth individually. This placement allowed her and her team to qualify for The Meet of Champions. In this season, Saralyn has had several personal records. She ran her fastest 5k in 19:30, at the Skylands Conference Championship at Phillipsburg High School, placing fourth, and ran 19:44, at the Group Championship on the Holmdel Park course. Saralyn has been competitively running since she was in fifth grade. She began running track with the Hunterdon Junior Lions Track Club, and then transitioned into longer distances with XC at CTMS. Saralyn is a member of National Honor Society, Rio Kappa History Honor Society, and Latin Honor Society. Saralyn looks back fondly on her years at North Hunterdon, both as a student and athlete. She is very grateful to have had such talented teammates athletically, and girls that became her closest friends. She is very proud of what the community of students, teachers, and coaches have pushed her to accomplish, both academically and athletically. Saralyn has verbally committed to continue running, at the Division 1 Level, at Hofstra University. She will continue to run all three seasons, competing in Cross Country, Indoor Track and Field, and Outdoor Track and Field. She is planning to major in Criminology with a minor in History.

BROOKE VAN DOREN

CLASS OF 2024

Senior Brooke Van Doren has been playing volleyball competitively for the past five years. Some of Brooke’s strongest skills on the court are her ability to communicate with her teammates and being a leader for her team. During the game, Brooke is a setter for the Lady Lions. This year, she achieved 450 career assists. She was MVP of the North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 Quarterfinals and made First Team in the Skyland Conference. Brooke is a member of Interact Club and Yearbook. She participates in Spike for a Cure and Relay for Life each year. Brooke plans on playing club volleyball during college. She has her sights set on attending Penn State University, Syracuse, or the University of Tennessee. Her intended major is Business or Communications. The past two years, Brooke has played club volleyball at Xtreme Volleyball Academy in Ledgewood, NJ. A fun fact about Brooke is she was voted Homecoming Queen this year. Brooke says her experience at North Hunterdon has been amazing. Being a part of the Volleyball Team has surrounded her with the best teammates, friends, and coaches she could have hoped for.

Health Office News

December is Seasonal Depression Awareness Month

Seasonal Depression Awareness Month raises awareness about Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and the various ways to relieve its symptoms.

  • Despite the long, dark days, December can be the most wonderful time of the year for most people. But it’s also the time for the winter blues for many others. For this reason, December has been designated as Seasonal Depression Awareness Month.
  • Seasonal Depression Awareness Month is an obscure observance intended to educate the public about seasonal depression, also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), and the various ways to alleviate its symptoms.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder is more prevalent in regions with harsher winters. But, like other mental health conditions, this condition doesn’t discriminate. It affects individuals of all ages, though older adults may have a higher risk.

  3. Click on the North Hunterdon Club Form
