A New School Year is Underway!

Welcome back to our students, staff, and parents to the start of another school year full of possibilities. The first few days of the 2023-2024 CRCSD school year are off to a great start despite having to dismiss classes early due to the extreme heat. Our staff is committed to ensuring an outstanding learning experience for all of our students as we make Every Learner. Future Ready. We encourage you to check out the first day of school photos from across the district using the button below.

Also, CRCSD strongly believes that family engagement is essential for our students’ success. When parents and guardians are involved in their child’s education, students have better academic outcomes, improved attendance, and higher graduation rates. We encourage you to read to your students before bed, help with their homework, and ask about their school day. Regularly check your Infinite Campus Parent Portal to review your student’s attendance, grades, schedule, and more. There are also many opportunities for you to get more involved in a school - attend school activities, collect Hy-Vee receipts, join your school's PTA, or volunteer in a classroom. We look forward to partnering with you this school year!

City View Celebrates 1st Day with a Community Event

City View Community High School celebrated its official first day of class on Wednesday, August 23, 2023. This is the district’s first new high school to open in more than 50 years and the first ever to have such an integral partnership with the business community. To celebrate, City View and the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance hosted a Community Kickoff Event at the Downtown Cedar Rapids Public Library. CRCSD Superintendent Dr. Gover, Cedar Rapids’ Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell, Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust President James Klein, and Danielle Monthei from Van Meter Inc. all spoke at the event, welcoming the more than 100 students attending the new downtown school. This new magnet school offers students a new, innovative way of learning through hands-on community projects and experiences driven by their interests. City View Community High School is located in the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance building in downtown Cedar Rapids, giving students easy access to business and city leaders.

CRCSD All Staff Kick-Off Event

Tuesday morning, staff from around the district gathered at the ImOn Ice Arena to kick off the new school year. They enjoyed performances from the high school marching bands and Jefferson’s LatinX dance group. Superintendent Dr. Grover shared the district’s goals for the year and an inspirational message with staff. Click here to see photos from the event.

Kingston Stadium Bag Policy

Now that the fall sports season is underway, we wanted to remind you of the updated bag policy at Kingston Stadium. There is a new clear bag only policy this year. Students may not bring any bags into the stadium, but adults who wish to bring in purses or bags must use clear ones. In addition, all bags are subject to search. Below are a few more reminders to ensure a safe, supportive, and collaborative environment for all athletes, officials, staff, and spectators.

  • No weapons, alcohol, non-prescription controlled substances, or products containing nicotine will be allowed in the stadium.

  • No loitering in and around the stadium.

  • Middle school-age children and younger must be accompanied by a paying adult.

  • Once you leave the stadium, you cannot return unless another ticket is purchased.

  • Abusive, threatening, or inappropriate verbal and physical conduct directed at students, school employees, officials, players, activity sponsors, security personnel, or another individual will not be tolerated.

Bond Petitions Available

In order for the bond referendum to be placed on the November 7th ballot, the community must collect 6,319 signatures for the petition by September 22nd. These petitions are available at each of our school buildings during normal business hours. Volunteers will be at games on Friday and Saturday at Kingston Stadium, area farmers' markets, and the Market After Dark event in downtown Cedar Rapids. To sign the petition, you must reside in the Cedar Rapids School District and be eligible to vote (you do not have to be a registered voter, just eligible to vote). Signing the petition does not indicate that you are for or against the bond but instead that you want it to appear on the November ballot for the public to vote on. This would be the district’s first bond in 23 years. The funds generated through the proposed bond referendum will be used to fund Phase 1 of the district’s comprehensive Facilities Master Plan, which will address several key priorities, including:

  • New land acquisition
  • A new 6th-8th grade middle school
  • Career and technical education additions to three high schools
  • New turf fields at three high schools
  • Kennedy cafeteria/kitchen renovations
  • Updates to Metro High School’s gym
  • Renovations for Franklin Middle School

Reminders

No School Sept 4 - Labor Day

Originally, Labor Day was organized to celebrate the various labor unions and their contributions to America's prosperity. Now, it's primarily thought of as a day of rest for workers and the unofficial end of summer. In observance of Labor Day, the Cedar Rapids Community School District will be closed on Monday, September 4th. We hope our students and their families have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day.

School Closings & Delays

In case of hazardous weather, like the extreme heat this week, schools may need to close temporarily for the safety of our students and staff. If this should occur, the district will keep everyone informed through various channels such as local media outlets, the district website, and district social media platforms. The district also sends out text and email notifications to parents. We kindly remind you to keep your contact information up-to-date on your Infinite Campus Parent Portal, as this is where we will send all school notifications. Your student’s school administrators, athletic directors, and coaches are the ones who will communicate any changes regarding specific extracurricular activities, practices, and athletic events.
