To St. John's Parishioners and Friends -
From the Deacon:
In this week’s reading from Jeremiah and Luke, we are encouraged to look forward to accept change and be ready for new beginnings while holding fast to God’s love. Jeremiah’s call to prophecy was in the “13th year of King Josiah” (627 - 587 BCE). Based on Jeremiah’s teaching and prophecy, King Josiah launched a religious reform that reaffirmed the covenant of Moses and centralized the worship of Yahweh in the Temple at Jerusalem. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus challenges both the religious elite, the President of the synagogue, and the “law” which forbade work on the sabbath and the cultural norm that woman had no standing in their society. Jesus not only healed the woman he did so on the sabbath in the synagogue and won the debate with the President of the synagogue. Thus, beginning the acceptance of woman and all of God’s children into the God’s community of love.
St. John’s is also in the midst of change as begin the search for our “priest in charge”. The vestry, the congregation, and the diocese are all working hand in hand amid God’s grace and love. Your Senior Warden, Dave Parker, has just sent all the information gathered from the congregation and required by the diocese to begin the next phase of the process. Here the link which provides all the information supplied to the diocese to support finding a priest in charge most able to meet the vision and needs of St. John’s.
So as Jeremiah and Jesus challenged the way things were in order to bring about change, so we also need to embrace our way forward trusting in God’s love and support and the hard work of your vestry, discernment committee, and all members of St. John’s.
“Prayer for the Election of a Priest in Charge”
Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church and guide the minds of those who shall choose a priest in charge for the parish that we may receive a faithful pastor, will care for your people and equip us for our ministries: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Deacon Steve

We have all seen the horrors of the war in Ukraine. If you would like to help those in need, Episcopal Relief and Development is working closely with a group that is on the ground in Ukraine. You can make a contribution on their website at https://www.episcopalrelief.org/ Please continue to keep the people of Ukraine in your prayers.
A Prayer for all those involved in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at risk and in fear, that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen

Due to the current increase in COVID19 transmission rates in Fairfax County, the Vestry has decided to continue the masking policy during worship services. We will monitor the transmission rates and modify this policy if things in our area change. We will use the data from the Fairfax County Health Department to make these determinations. This applies to our worship service. The policy of our ministry partners may differ, so please respect them by masking while in other parts of the building. You should also mask If you need to be in close proximity to others in an enclosed space. You never know who may be unable to be vaccinated or is otherwise compromised. Thank you for your cooperation. We also continue our "safe" way of having communion by using the individual cups for the bread and the wine.

|
The services continue to be live streamed at 9:30 AM on Sunday morning, and they can be watched later as well. On Saturday, we will resend the link, along with a link for the bulletin and the lectionary class.

SUNDAY WORSHIP & EDUCATION
|
|
We can prepare our hearts & minds by reading ahead
for the Sunday Service lesson
The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost
August 21, 2022
The First Reading: Jeremiah 1:4-10
God calls Jeremiah to be his prophet, a plan which God foreknew and appointed, despite Jeremiah’s doubts at his fitness.
The Psalm: 71:1-6, p. 683, BCP
The Second Reading: Hebrews 12:18-29
God is the only being worth human fear, though our relationship with God is not founded on fear, our awe and respect fuels the amazing love we seek to offer back to God through the love he shows in Jesus.
The Gospel: Luke 12:49-56
True discipleship can be lonely and isolating, there is no way around it. Trying to weasel out of hardship with divining does not work.

Assistant Bishop Jennifer Brooke-Davidson Accepts Call
to Diocese of North Carolina
The Rt. Rev. Susan Goff, Bishop Suffragan and Ecclesiastical Authority, announced today that the Rt. Rev. Jennifer Brooke-Davidson has accepted a call to serve as Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina. She completes her ministry in Virginia on September 22.
Bishop Brooke-Davidson’s three-year appointment as Assistant Bishop of Virginia began in November 1, 2019. As churches navigated the challenges of these last three years, including Covid, political unrest, and deepening racial reckoning, Bishop Brooke-Davidson took particular responsibility for the convening of the Deans of the Regions and for support of diocesan mission congregations through the Committee for Congregational Missions.
Bishop Goff celebrated Bishop Brooke-Davidson’s ministry, saying “I am deeply grateful to my colleague and sister in Christ for sharing her gifts of insight, clarity and fortitude with us for nearly three years. I will miss Jennifer and wish her every good blessing as she moves into new leadership and service in the Diocese of North Carolina."
Bishop Brooke-Davidson will begin her ministry in the Diocese of North Carolina on November 1. In her role as Assistant Bishop, she will focus on Christian formation, church redevelopment and leadership training.
“It is hard to leave the wonderful friends and colleagues that I have come to love in this Diocese, but I know that the good work will continue here in making the Gospel known and the Kingdom real in this place,” said Bishop Brooke-Davidson. “I ask your prayers as Carrick and I move into a new chapter in another vibrant corner of Christ’s vineyard. We will miss you and we ask God’s blessing on the Diocese of Virginia.”
