I hope that your summer has been a time to energize and develop new research ideas! I wanted to make you aware that the Office of Research and Innovation’s (ORI) Office of Sponsored Programs has recently welcomed a host of new grants administrators and has, accordingly, started to redistribute their portfolios. As you look ahead at your proposal plans for the coming academic year, please be sure to look up the name and contact information for the grants administrator assigned to your academic department using ORI’s administrator search tool. As always, if you need any administrative support for your research endeavors, my team is here to assist. Please feel free to reach out at any time.
Warm regards,
Associate Dean, Research Enterprise

Updates to the 21-22 FAR Process
The Faculty Annual Review (FAR) process evaluating the 2021-2022 academic year will once again use Career Pathway for submission. Some updates have been made based on feedback from last year’s process, including longer lead time, the ability to include creative activity in addition to research and scholarship, and a new field for information that may not be captured elsewhere. The deadline for submission is October 7, 2022. Please see the Office of Faculty Advancement website for more detailed information about the submission process.

Congratulations
Jason Baxter, PhD, professor of chemical and biological engineering, and Megan Creighton, PhD, assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering, have been selected to receive the Louis and Bessie Stein Family Fellowship to support research, exchange, teaching, and collaboration with partners in Israel. Creighton and Baxter will work with other academic researchers and industry partners to address the fast-growing source of solid waste associated with wind energy.
Vibha Kalra, PhD, George B. Francis Chair Professor of chemical and biological engineering and Michel Barsoum, PhD, Distinguished Professor of materials science and engineering, have received an award from NSF for their project titled “GOALI: Development of Next Generation MXene-based Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) Batteries with Practical Operating Temperatures.” As part of this GOALI grant, Kalra and Barsoum will collaborate with industry partners to gain perspective on the heavy-duty electric vehicle and battery industries. The team will study a new class of MXene-based sulfur cathodes to enable an electrolyte that can operate at higher temperatures while also mitigating capacity loss due to polysulfide shuttling in Lithium-Sulfur batteries.
Yury Gogotsi, PhD, Distinguished University and Charles T. and Ruth M. Bach Professor of materials science and engineering and Director of the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute, received an award from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research to support the travel of Ukrainian scientists to the 23rd YUCOMAT & XII World Round Table on Sintering 2022 Conference. The conference will bring together approximately 200 scientists, including some of the best known and most cited researchers in the materials science field from Western and Eastern Europe, the U.S., and other countries. Thanks to Gogotsi’s efforts, the conference organizers are offering free registration to Ukrainian scientists and this award will cover all remaining expenses, allowing more than 20 Ukrainian scientists to attend.
Karen Miu, PhD, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Jaudelice de Oliveira, PhD, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, are recipients of an award from the Office of Naval Research for their project “Energy Broadcast System: Multi-Rate Analysis for Improved Situational Awareness.” This project will focus on establishing multi-rate analysis tools for control of power electronic power distribution systems with uncertainty.
Earlier this month, the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute (DNI) hosted "MXenes: Addressing Global Challenges with Innovation," an international conference on the 2D materials discovered here at Drexel. More than 200 scientists attended the conference in person or online, and several Drexel experts led and participated in sessions discussing the future of the material. Congratulations to DNI operations project manager and conference secretary Jamie Banks and all those who helped to make the conference a success.

Patrick Gurian, PhD, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, was quoted in an Aug. 16 Scientific American story about possible risks associated with using plastic pipes to replace lead water pipes.
Franco Montalto, PhD, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, was quoted in a July 21 Philadelphia Inquirer story about Philadelphia's summers growing hotter and efforts, like Montalto's partnership with the Hunting Park neighborhood, to develop new shading and cooling strategies around the city.
Matthew Stamm, PhD, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, was quoted in a July 18 GCN Online story about the prevalence of deepfake images and videos and concerns that they may be used to manipulate elections.
