Interim Dean and Priest-in-Charge's Note

This Sunday, on the fourth Sunday in Lent and Laetare Sunday, we welcome Canon Melissa McCarthy as our special guest preacher at both 8am and 10am, and we will commission the Vestry and Wardens of St. John’s Cathedral during the 10am service. Canon Melissa McCarthy is the Canon to the Ordinary for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, which is a position that she has held since May 2017.

When announced that Canon Melissa would serve with diocesan leadership, she shared, “I hold in common the desire to be servant leaders, grounded in prayer, with relationships of love and grace as central to this collective ministry to which we bring our different gifts and skills. Our hearts are hungry to empower collaborative, creative and prophetic ministry across the diocese.”

This was certainly the experience of the Vestry and staff of St. John’s felt when she led a retreat for us last year on the vision, mission and values that we have adopted as a Cathedral.

Join us, and let us celebrate and rejoice with grateful hearts on this Laetare Sunday.

The Weekly Update

A Message from the Transition Committee

We are happy to announce the formation of your Transition Committee. We are grateful for the individuals listed below who will volunteer their time and energy in the many weeks ahead. They comprise a diverse committee that is representative of our congregation:

Luis González, Committee Chair

Arcadio Morales, Vestry Liaison

Marci Clare, Marc Fredson, Mary Gleason, Yoonwoo Hwang, Christopher James, Stephen Meighan, Earl Mounger, Martha Ree, Dona Smith-Lopez, Eric Tate, Karen Uhler

The committee will prayerfully discern who we are as a congregation and Cathedral and what we want for our future. The committee's work will start where our collective hard work with The Rev. Dr. Eric Law left off; their goal is to present a Parish Profile to the Vestry and Diocese. The Parish Profile will describe our history, mission and goals, hopes and dreams, and the qualities we seek in our next Dean.

We have a lot of work ahead of us! Please pray for the Transition Committee; every member will need your prayers to support them in the weeks ahead.

The Transition Committee will keep us updated on their work and progress. If you have any questions about their work, please contact Luis González, Committee Chair.
