A Fundraising Update

From Board Chair Magi Raible (& Bella)

We are excited about all the help The L-Fund is providing to our local community.

With increased outreach and ongoing needs that arose during the pandemic, The L-Fund has provided over $50,000 of financial assistance to lesbians in our community in the first eight months of 2022. This is more than all of the grants given in 2020 and 2021. And we are budgeting to provide at least another $40,000 through December of this year.

For so many women, one missed paycheck or an unexpected expense can cause a financial hole they cannot get out of alone. We want to continue to help these women and so many others!

Through the incredibly generous support from our community of individuals and businesses, we have managed to raise over $45,000 so far this year. A very special thank you to Eisenhower Health, Rhonda Ceccato, Sue Burnside, Beverly Sweigart and Edith Grossi for providing over half of our income this year!  Thank you all so very much for your continuing support of this life-saving organization.

Like many nonprofits staffed by an all-volunteer board, we juggle assistance costs and overhead while striv to protect the reserve funds that enable us to continue to provide outreach and assistance. Preparing for potential challenges that could limit our fundraising and increase need (such as another pandemic) requires us to remain financially strategic. In one recent such effort, we chose to terminate our office lease early and reduced our overhead by about $10,000 in the second half of this year.

Overall, The L-Fund continues to thrive in 2022! We have some great FUNdraising events planned through the end of the year and we hope to see you all there!

How The L-Fund's Programs Have Helped in 2022

Lesbians In Need (LIN)

We have been busy providing assistance to numerous Lesbians In Need.

Car repairs were definitely a big need this year! We helped three different lesbians with a total of over $5,000 in car repairs. One got into a car accident while avoiding a dog. We are happy to report that both the dog and the driver are fine.

Another lesbian needed some help to get back on her feet so we paid her rent, car payment and insurance for the month of July to the tune of $1,729.

We also assisted another lesbian who lost her job and just needed help with paying her $900 rent for August while she got settled into her new job.

Each woman has been so incredibly gracious and grateful for the help The L-Fund provided!

L-Fund Education Assistance Program (LEAP)

We love helping women advance in their educational endeavors!

Recently, we purchased a laptop for Roselyn Gonzalez and helped her with the purchase of her school books. She is a graduate of Palm Springs High School who is attending University of California at San Diego in the Fall. Another recipient had a simple request – she needed GED prep books and headphones to help her be able to study in some peace and quiet. We were happy to oblige!

We also assisted a former recipient, Paula Sheehy, with another grant to help pay her tuition for her last year at Adams State University for her Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Paula continues to amaze us with her dedication to her education and her decision to go into a field where she can help others.

Finally, we were excited to help an exuberant Carolina Romero who needed assistance with a 3-day certification program being held in Texas that would allow her to apply for a promotion in her field of work - engineering. The L-Fund grant is for $2,350 and pays for her airfare, hotel, certification course and the purchase of a new laptop she desperately needed to do her work. The L-Fund and Carolina were also recently featured on KESQ News. Watch the story here!

Debra I. Moore Grant for the Arts

The L-Fund has been quite busy in supporting the Arts community, too. We are thrilled to be helping so many women in our community to increase their income as artists and to bring quality lesbian entertainment to the desert!

We assisted glass artist Gwendolyn Morgan with a new snazzy website, covering costs for the next three years for $1,500, including updates, maintenance, domain and site security, editing and copyrights. Check out her beautiful glass pieces at https://glassstudio34.com/.

The L-Fund is assisting Mina Hartong once again with a $1,300 grant to bring her “I’m Speaking” series to the desert. Her next series will be on November 9, 2022 and titled “Reflections on Veteran’s Day” at the Mizell Senior Center.

We were thrilled to grant $1,200 to Lesbian Artists of the Desert (LAOD) to help pay for a year’s worth of meeting space rental at CREATE in Palm Desert, plus monies for two art shows and costs of Honoraria guest speakers.

The L-Fund is excited to partner with the legendary Robin Tyler! Our $3,600 will help bring the talents of four lesbian comedian/artists, including Robin, to the desert in the Robin Tyler Productions Presents Comedy Shows at the Palm Springs Cultural Center.

Finally, local hair stylist extraordinaire, Read Brown, is planning on starting a program with local cosmetology schools. She has developed a classroom presentation and workbook which will help her give classes on the actual business of working behind the chair – goal setting, consultations, growing skill sets, becoming and staying inspired, etc. We're excited to see our $2,000 grant help this visionary bring her vision to fruition!

The L-Fund Sparkled at

the Starlight Soirée!

On March 26, The L-Fund held our annual fundraiser event in a smaller outdoor setting to accommodate pandemic safety precautions. But that didn't dim our shine!!

A Starlight Soirée: an evening of old Hollywood glamour under the stars brought together 100 guests that enjoyed a themed evening of live music, entertainment and a live auction, all to benefit The L-Fund’s grant programs.

During the evening we awarded MaryAnn Tripodi the Bobreta Franklin Community Service Award, in recognition of all she does to bring the LGBTQ+ community together.

The event also counted on the comedy of Robin Tyler, a poem by board member Doris Reed and the music of Gennine Francis.

We are grateful for our guests’ attendance and for all The L-Fund partners that made this evening possible thanks to their generous donations!

Meet the Board Event

Introduced New Faces

In April, we hosted a small event at Eight4Nine in Palm Springs  focused on introducing the current board. It was an opportunity  for us to share what drives each of us in our work with The L-Fund and our commitment to this cause.

In addition, we celebrated retiring board members Sharon Siegel, Jan Alden and Maria Fraser, thanking them for all their years of service to our organization.

We are grateful to serve and lead this organization through this new board!

We thank Eisenhower for sponsoring this event and Eight4Nine for having us.

Bingo Night Was Legendary!

To help celebrate Pride Month, in June we partnered with Oscar’s who held a Legendary Bingo Night benefitting The L-Fund!

Hosted by Deven and Ned we shared a night of games, good food, laughter and fun prizes. We look forward to hosting more events like this and thank you for your donations!

A Special Thank You

The L-Fund would like to thank you, the community, for opening up your hearts, homes and wallets to those lesbians and their families in need who have been assisted by our organization. You have given them your time, your efforts, your grace, and your wisdom.

We are not always immediately aware when our recipients are getting assistance from others in the community. But recently it came to our attention that one particular recipient and her son have truly been embraced by the community and we were touched by how your generosity has given her the chance to thrive and the opportunity to move beyond the circumstances that brought her here.

The work we do cannot be done without the willingness and support of the community to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. You are the manifestation of the phrase, “It takes a village.”

We are humbled by your efforts and truly grateful for all you have done and continue to do.

With Gratitude,

The L-Fund Board of Directors

After moving from LA to Palm Springs in 2008, Mei Ling has enjoyed volunteering throughout the community at The Center, The Community Food Bank and The Neuro Vitality Center. She joined The L-Fund Board in 2017.

As Chair of The L-Fund’s Education Assistance Program, Mei Ling has the opportunity to “pay it forward” by supporting lesbians in pursuing their educational goals.

In her "spare" time, you can often find her working at The Palm Springs Vintage Market, dancing hula at community events, reading, going to the gym, and cooking for family and friends!

Along with her partner Darlene and their pug Mochi, they enjoy spending time with Mei Ling’s son Aaron, as well as spending time in WA visiting her daughter Miranda who just had twins (a boy and a girl!). Yes, she’s now a very proud grandmother too!
