An Important Faith Conversation

Dear Church,

In light of the recent SCOTUS decision to overturn the federal protections of Roe v. Wade, we have been confronted more than ever with the tenuous intersection of faith, partisan politics, and morality.

We do not presume to have all the answers, but we do have tools at our disposal that help us to respond to issues of social justice and morality. First among those is a series of official social statements researched and written by Lutheran Biblical and theological scholars, and approved for study and discussion by the Churchwide Assembly over various years.

One such statement is the ELCA Social Statement on Abortion. The social statement on abortion is not meant to be a partisan document; in fact, it does not neatly align with either major American political party. It is meant to provide us the biblical and theological substance to make informed decisions, to support those in need, and to direct our ministries to respond to the needs of our community as they arise.

I suspect that most of you have never heard of these social statements, or read one – and we would like to change that trend. Please plan to join Pastor Cathy Lauterhahn, Dr. Robin Larson, and me after worship on Sunday, July 10th in person in the sanctuary as we discuss the ELCA Social Statement on Abortion.

We take our motivation from Isaiah, when he says "Come, let us reason together..." We may not all agree, but let's show one another that we can still come together to have a meaningful discussion on a timely issue. It is also our hope that this conversation will open the door to future conversations on the other social statements. Questions or concerns? Let me know.
