Take charge of your health
When you play an active role in your health, you can improve the quality of care you and your family receive. To take charge of your health:
- Keep track of important health information. This includes checking your health insurance coverage in MyBenefits to ensure it’s what you elected during open enrollment.
- Download mobile apps, such as My Health Toolkit®, Express Scripts® and EyeMed®, to your mobile phone.
- Make sure you have your health insurance ID cards handy. If you’ve downloaded the mobile apps, you will have copies of your ID cards on your phone.
- Schedule your annual doctor appointments for the year. These include a well visit, dentist appointments and an eye exam.
You’ll also want to take advantage of a preventive health screening this year. A preventive screening can give you insight about your health risks so you can take steps to improve your health. Be sure to schedule your preventive screening, which is available at no cost to you, before your adult well visit. Learn more about what is included as part of an adult well visit at peba.sc.gov/well-visits.

Changes to federal tax withholding forms
Effective January 1, 2023, the IRS mandated the use of a revised Form W-4P, Withholding Certificate for Pension or Annuity Payments, for making federal tax withholding elections for periodic monthly benefits. Members must use this form and submit it to PEBA for federal withholding elections newly made or changed after December 31, 2022.
As a result, PEBA updated its processes and automated systems. Benefit recipients can use PEBA’s Withholding Certificate for Monthly Benefit Payments ( Form 7202) to update or change South Carolina state withholding allowances only.
Tax withholding changes for 2023
The federal and South Carolina state income tax withholding tables changed for tax year 2023. Accordingly, if you receive a monthly retirement benefit, you may notice a change in your net January benefit amount.
If you want to update or change your state withholding allowances (exemptions) or flat dollar amount, complete PEBA’s Form 7202 and submit it to PEBA.
If you want to update or change your federal withholding elections, complete IRS Form W-4P and submit it to PEBA.
If you are satisfied with your current withholding elections for your monthly benefit, you do not need to do anything. Your withholding elections will remain unchanged. It is not necessary for you to submit new information unless you want to make a change to your withholdings.
PEBA to mail 2022 1099-R forms
PEBA will mail 1099-R forms for calendar year 2022 by January 31, 2023, to anyone who received a benefit payment from the retirement systems. Please allow two weeks for delivery. As a reminder, benefit recipients may also access and print their tax documents any time through Member Access.

Set up online member portal accounts
PEBA’s online member portals give you access to your insurance and retirement accounts, allow you to view and update your personal information and conduct certain online transactions. The member portals are safe, secure and available anytime from anywhere you have internet access.
Follow these best practices to keep your accounts secure.
Set up MyBenefits and Member Access accounts if you haven’t already. MyBenefits is insurance benefits portal. Member Access is the retirement benefits portal.
Choose strong passwords for both accounts and create a unique username for Member Access. Do not share the information with others.
Review your accounts periodically. We recommend that you set up accounts and review them occasionally to protect your account from being accessed by an unauthorized user.
