Greetings!

Acorn woodpecker, common raven, brown creeper, chestnut-backed chickadee, American crow, California scrub-jay, black phoebe, California quail…these are some of the community members I listened to on a short walk outside of my office at Bear Valley today. The Woodpecker Trail is a sweet loop where we introduce youth to the interdependent relationships of an ecosystem. We start with a gratitude circle to ground them in the goodness of connection. Today, I am so grateful to you for how you connect with our conservation, education, and community-building work throughout the year.
I hope you will get a chance to celebrate the abundance of public land with a visit to the Seashore over the holiday weekend. If you are in the Bear Valley area, please join us for the four-year anniversary of our full moon walk program on Saturday, view the gallery of art from the California Coastal Commission’s Youth Art & Poetry Contest at the Bear Valley Visitor Center, or take your own self-guided walk on the Woodpecker Trail.
This park is a gift for which we can all give thanks.

The Woodpecker Trail is a short, one-mile stretch that encompasses a rich diversity of habitats and creatures. Along the trail, you'll find vistas showing off the power of tectonic plates, an open meadow perfect for species spotting, and a dense tree canopy filled with bird song.
Use this one-page species guide for some family fun on the trail this holiday season. You can also read through this in-depth guide to learn everything you need to know about the trail. Take your time; close observation yields many hidden treasures!
