Good Ally Spotlight

Wildfire Relief

Hello Amanda,

September is quickly approaching, a season when many of us are settling back into routine and looking ahead for fall activities to participate in.

This time of year is especially busy for True North Aid as we prepare for September 30th (Orange Shirt Day, formally recognized as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation since 2021). Individuals, organizations, and businesses turn to True North Aid seeking ways to broaden their understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action and to educate themselves on this chapter in Canadian history.

Our work exists due to the ongoing effects of the residential school system on Indigenous people. We invite you to continue learning and educating others as you do. Check out True North Aid's recommended resources page here to accompany your journey.

In the meantime, we encourage you to celebrate the many programs that True North Aid has accomplished with communities in northern and remote regions that fall within our stones of support. We thank all who make these programs possible: communities, their champions and supporters like you.

All the best for a great September,

True North Aid Team

Project Highlights

Back-To-School 2023

Our Back-to-School Program is back! We’d love your support in providing back-to-school essentials for youth living in remote Indigenous communities in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories and Alberta. Find out more information on our website. If you'd like to donate, click here.

Iglulik Wilderness First Aid Course

The 20-hour Wilderness First Aid course prepared 20 high school students in Iglulik, Nunavut with the essential first aid skills for land-based activities and beyond. This included being part of hands-on-based practice scenarios like “wound” simulation. The students loved showing their families and friends how realistic it was!

The Ballantyne Project #WeSeeYou Trip 2023

True North Aid was proud to support The Ballantyne Project with their second annual #WeSeeYou Trip providing 11 youth from Tl'Kemstin First Nation with an educational and fun experience in Vancouver. The youth visited Capilano University and Skwachays Hotel, and took a behind-the-scenes tour of Vancouver Airport, along with some other fun activities!

We are grateful to have you in the True North Aid community.

Join us online on our social media channels to follow our ongoing updates of projects and programs in northern communities.

Buffalo Narrows Fiddle Program

True North Aid is proud to continue supporting the Buffalo Narrows Fiddle Program at the Twin Lakes Community School in Saskatchewan. This program provides fiddle lessons to students, an important part of Métis culture and heritage. Students can look forward to performing in front of family and friends for various community celebrations and holidays!

Children's Program in Fort McMurray

We're excited to announce a new program with the Children's Program in Fort McMurray, supporting surrounding Indigenous communities with critical baby supplies and infant items. Stay tuned for more updates on how your contributions have provided practical support to northern communities in Alberta.

On the Land and Canoe Programs

We're also wrapping up several On-the-Land Programs and summer canoe trips in Grand Cache Alberta with the Mountain Métis Association, Northwest Angle #33 First Nation and the All Nations Paddles Up Awaken the Canoes program that brings thousands of people together for their annual Tribal Journey along the Salish Sea in British Columbia. We're excited to share updates on these programs and more in the upcoming weeks! Check out our social media to stay up to date!

Join Patty Krawec, speaker and author of Becoming Kin: An Indigenous Call to Unforgetting the Past and Reimagining Our Future on a weekend retreat that explores the relationship and responsibilities we have to ourselves, our families, and to one another.

Tuesday & Thursday Evenings starting September 12th

at 7pm EST (virtual)

In preparing for National Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30th, we are hosting the Settler Discussion Series twice a week for two weeks. In 4 parts we present the truth about Canada’s historical and current relationship between non-Indigenous and Indigenous people by addressing the topics of Privilege, Land, Residential Schools, and Allyship in a factual way. Each session is approx. 1 – 1.5 hours long. Reconciliation Walk Volunteers Needed

Kingston - Toronto - Kitchener/Waterloo

We are looking for committed individuals to help us host this educational and impactful event.

In our effort to support National Day For Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th (also Orange Shirt Day), True North Aid's Reconciliation Walk provides non-Indigenous Canadians with an opportunity to learn about the timeline of Canada’s residential school legacy through an interactive, self-guided experience on a wooded trail.

Further, the Reconciliation Walk hopes to instill an urgency for change and action in moving forward together in justice and solidarity. Learn more/Register

Good Ally Program Spotlight

Good Ally Program (GAP) is designed to encourage meaningful collaboration between True North Aid and like-minded Canadians who desire to

move forward together in a spirit of reconciliation.

Good Ally partners put learning into action by volunteering with our organization as opportunities become available and/or fundraise toward practical humanitarian initiatives that bring attention to the good work of True North Aid.

Notre Dame High School | Ottawa, Ontario

Beginning in February, students in Mme. O'Toole's Social Entrepreneurship Program (SEP) hosted a 'Dragon's Den' style presentation, with peers choosing True North Aid from one of many highlighted non-profits to fundraise for.

The students began to research water-related issues within Canada and sought to bring attention to the need for safe, clean drinking water in Indigenous communities. They did so by designing and making chemical-free bio-degradable soap to sell and donating the proceeds to True North Aid.

Over five months, True North Aid had the honour of assisting students through education and supporting their endeavour alongside community mentors and school staff.

Mme. O'Toole's class raised over $700!

Corporate Responsibility

Whether you’re a member of management, lead a team, or want to engage your co-workers in education and fundraising efforts, True North Aid offers a range of options to get involved in supporting our work. We can set up you and your group with online tools and resources to easily fundraise.

Directing your efforts to our General Fund supports our core values of self-determination and prioritizing Indigenous-led work. It allows us to easily respond to areas where it is needed most in communities, as indicated by the leaders of those communities.

Or fundraise for specific campaigns, such as our ongoing Back-to-School Drive - it’s not too late to join in!

Wildfire Relief in Northern Canada

As we have witnessed, many people are affected by the historic wildfires in British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and Quebec. The return home to their communities will be difficult, and essential and critical care items will be needed more than ever. Please consider donating to help Indigenous communities rebuild after these devastating and unprecedented fires.
