Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I have many reasons, and added to my list is the experience of last year’s Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. We had a powerful time of worship followed up by a festive and encouraging service project. Nine congregations came together to worship and support the hungry in Macon. This year, we’re going to do it again.
I hope you’ll join me at Temple Beth Israel on Thursday, November 16, at 6:00 p.m. for this year’s service. Led by all nine congregations, we’ll gather for worship in their sanctuary and then move into Burndt Hall (their fellowship hall) to make sandwiches for the community refrigerators at Steward Chapel and Centenary, just as we did last year.
This year is particularly special for me because of what it represents. The Thanksgiving service last year was the first time all nine congregations came together. We forged bonds and decided to continue to meet together. That work has led to our strong support for the Temple when they experienced hate from Neo-Nazis in June, the sharing of resources, and a trusting community of support for the similar challenges we all face. We have named ourselves the Downtown Tapestry: an Interfaith Community in Macon, representing how we are unified in our differences, just like the different threads of a tapestry. It’s been incredible to watch these bonds of trust and support grow over the last year, and I look forward to gathering together with my colleagues and their congregations as we celebrate this wonderful holiday together.
See you there!
– Ted
