CLSA was founded to advance the interests of the profession. Inherent in that scope is the perceived division between private and public sector land surveyors.

Having been employed in both, my perception is that there is a different mindset for those in the public sector, particularly for City and County Surveyors. They must deal with “everything that comes in the door.” It is monopolistic, in that there is one agency which deals with examining and processing maps for approval and filing, for example.

In private sector work, there is specialization. Due to workload, prospective projects may be taken in by a competitor. Clients – as opposed to customers – are advocated for through the permitting process.

This does not indicate opposing interests. It merely points out that the day-to-day approach to shepherding a given project through the statutory scheme comes from a different source.

For the most part, the system works well symbiotically. There are certainly boom and bust cycles, and CLSA has been diligent in working on solutions.

STEVE PARRISH FINAL POINT

On Friday, May 20, Steve Parrish was on hand for his Final Point ceremony at Great Basin College in Elko, Nevada. Also present were his wife, Gloria, and three grandchildren. Typically, a final point monument is set posthumously. However, Steve helped establish the marker and made it a party rather than a eulogy!

Several dozen surveyors were in attendance – including a phone call from New Mexico – paying tribute to this mentor for PLSS retracement techniques. Steve parried many anecdotal tributes, correcting the record where necessary.

CLSA President Warren Smith presented Steve with the Dorothy Caligeri Distinguished Surveyor award, and pointed out that Steve was a retired County Surveyor for Mono and Alpine Counties.

YSN CAMPOUT ON MT. DIABLO
By Warren Smith

I had the pleasure of camping out on Mt. Diablo over the weekend with a group of young surveyors. We were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the monument which is the initial point for all surveys in most of Northern California and all of Nevada.

There were exhibits of surveyor's compasses and chains and hands-on demonstration of old school technology. Great exposure for modern surveyors who are following old footsteps.

Many thanks to the Mt. Diablo Surveyors Historical Society for providing the vintage equipment.

He was studious and began studying for a surveyor’s license. Hawkins Engineering employed him for several years, then he moved on to the RRM Design Group. In 2008, during the recession, Kevin formed The Bronson Company as a licensed surveyor. When someone would ask him what his dream job was, he said “This is It.”

Jamaican Prime Minister Recognizes the Need for More Land Surveyors
The Prime Minister, speaking at a title handing-over ceremony in Old Harbour, St Catherine, spoke of a need for “more trained land surveyors” in Jamaica. The members of the 92-year-old Land Surveyors Association of Jamaica (LSAJ) agree with him in principle – that it is always timely and beneficial to continue the refinement of the processes and functions of the profession to ensure its continued development and sustainability.
Precise Location of Indiana-Michigan Border Unknown
Borders are important, but the one between Indiana and Michigan is a bit unclear. It was last surveyed in 1827, and it’s been so long that both states don’t really know anymore exactly where it is. But a new land survey seeks to change that once and for all.

Jack Owens is a semi-retired surveyor who’s been advocating for a modern retracing of the Indiana-Michigan border for 20 years. According to him, the fuzziness is a result of “benign neglect.”

“I call it the quiet border, because nothing ever comes up,” Owens said.

In contrast, Michigan’s other two borders have been controversial. In 1835, the territory nearly went to war with Ohio over control of the Toledo Strip. In 1926 — almost one century later — Michigan and Wisconsin went to the Supreme Court to settle a border dispute on the Upper Peninsula.

Surveying the Great Lakes – NOAA Podcast Episode 56
Keeping our marine transportation system functioning in a way that is safe and efficient requires information about water depth; mapping the shape of the seafloor, lakebed, or coastline; pinpointing the location of possible obstructions; and understanding many other physical features of water bodies. Hydrography is the science behind this information, and surveying is a primary method of obtaining hydrographic data. In this episode, we learn about surveying and NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson's survey missions in the Great Lakes.
