This week's featured ride story:

Riding the loneliest road
in the Ozarks:
The Ozarks Highlands Skyway

AR 16 -- the Ozarks Highlands Skyway -- runs from the Oklahoma border across most of the width of the State of Arkansas. From Fayetteville to Greers Ferry it winds from one quaint little town to another; through tiny communities with unique names like Swain, Nail, Deer, Lurton, Witts Springs, and my personal favorite, Ben Hur.

If you were traveling by car from Fayetteville to Greers Ferry AR 16 would be your last route of choice. That's exactly what makes it fantastic for riders.
Highlights: Your ride on AR 16 takes you adjacent to the upper White River; it intersects The Pig Trail, AR 21 S to the gorgeous Boxley Valley; along the backbone of the Ozarks; runs by the Glory Hole, just a moderate hike (one mile downhill but it feels like two miles back up).

Our good friend Donnie Crain shared this with us recently:

"If you are ever riding Hwy 7 between Hot Springs and Russellville, please keep in mind my Hollis Country Store. It's on the National Register of Historic Places and it's been in operation since 1930 - and operated by my family since 1940. My wife Melissa and I purchased it in September 2020 and are happy to keep the tradition going - and serving Arkansas's Best Bologna Sandwiches!"

Thanks for the update and the photos Donnie! We hope all our readers will stop in when they're in your neck of the woods!

Exploring The Historic
War Eagle Bridge

Last year I mentioned that a beloved bridge over the Buffalo River between Harrison and Jasper was torn down recently. And I told you then that there are several bridges across the Ozarks you better enjoy while you still can because they are going to eventually be replaced by bland, one style fits all structures.

These are state highway bridges that ARDOT has them in their sights.

There are two bridges that are also beloved and could be replaced, but not without a real fight with locals, though. One is the Beaver Bridge just north of Eureka Springs on AR 187. The other is the War Eagle Bridge, just off AR 12 a few miles east of Rogers, in Benton County.

War Eagle Bridge crosses the War Eagle Creek at the reconstructed War Eagle Mill. Riders love to ride to the mill/creek/bridge. The roads are scenic and the location is beautiful. And an annual crafts fair, which has been held for decades, is still going strong.

Several years ago the county wanted to replace the one-lane truss War Eagle Bridge but the uproar was deafening and would have spelled the end of many local politicians careers... for certain. The landmark is not to be trifled with.

It may some day have to be replaced. But I 99.9% guarantee you that the War Eagle Bridge will be preserved as a walking bridge regardless of its longterm future as a vehicle bridge.

You will enjoy the ride to War Eagle, and to the restaurant at the mill, and crossing the wood-planked one-lane bridge. You can fish, splash in the creek or just relax and enjoy the area.

Getting there...

Off AR 12 look for War Eagle Road, to the south. It's only a couple miles to the bridge.

Off U.S. 412 take AR 303 North. 303 ends at the Benton County line, turning into High Sky Inn Road and into War Eagle Road at the bridge. This stretch is fantastic.

You will enjoy a trip to this historic bridge. Take care, though, on the uneven wood road-bed across the bridge.
