Dear Friends of CIHF,
We hope everyone had a great summer filled with the balance of relaxation and productivity! Classes are beginning for the Fall semester at Cornell and at CIHF we are excited to welcome students and faculty back to campus.
This summer we welcomed Heather Kolakowski as our Interim Executive Director while Mardelle Shepley steps away on sabbatical through the end of 2022. Heather has been an Associate Director for CIHF since 2019 and is a Lecturer of Food and Beverage Management in the Nolan School of Hotel Administration teaching several food and beverage courses, including Restaurant Management and Nonprofit Social Enterprise and Food Justice. We look forward to Heather's leadership this fall!

New CIHF Faculty Fellow: Lisa Chervinsky | |
Lisa is a Lecturer Operations, Technology, and Information Management in the Nolan School of Hotel Administration. As a licensed architect and former Hotelie, her in-depth understanding of the business of hospitality and creative vision not only inspire, but help students develop the skills to accomplish their career goals. Over her 25+ year career, Lisa has developed iconic and award-winning hospitality spaces for both branded and boutique operators in the US and abroad, leading teams from initial conception through construction. Lisa believes that innovative thinking and effective working methods are critical to enable organizations to sustain healthy environments, profitability, and a strong work-life balance for all employees. She operates her firm, Collective Vision Design, Ltd based on this model. | |
New CIHF Industry Scholar: Zachary Hollander | |
Zach Hollander (Human Ecology / PAM ’04) is the Co-founder and Co-CEO of Kindred Uncommon — a designer, developer and operator of purpose driven residential communities for modern adults of all ages. Prior to founding Kindred, Zach supported the launch of two billion dollar businesses at Google — the Google Store and Google Pixel — holding global leadership roles spanning product design, product management, marketing, and business operations. Zach has worked in various other roles as a private sector consultant to Fortune 500 companies (Bain & Company, Novantas) and in public policy and economic development for the State of New York (Empire State Development Corporation). He holds a BS in Policy Analysis and Management from Cornell University and a Masters in Business Administration from the Kellogg School at Northwestern. | |
Reimagining Workshops by CIHF Executive Director Mardelle Shepley, Troy Savage, & Judy Smith | |
In spring of 2021, two Reimagining Workshops were held to explore ideal neonatal intensive care environments. The Reimagining Workshops were born out of a desire to provide a source of information for the Facility Guidelines Institute Guidelines. To date, there have been four Reimagining Workshops. These experiences enable participants to operate outside of their comfort zone, an important step toward achieving innovation.

Effective Service Operations Management: Aligning Priorities in Healthcare Operations with Customer Preferences by CIHF Co-Founder and Executive Director Emeritus, Rohit Verma, Faculty Fellow, Hessam Sadatsafavi, & Lu Kong

A multi-year study shows that customers are concerned with (1) cost of care, (2) access and coverage, and (3) quality and efficiency. These concerns are found to be associated with health policies and sociodemographic characteristics. In the article these concerns are compared with published healthcare operations research. The authors respectfully make suggestions for future healthcare operations research directions.

This six-course certificate program provides you with in-depth instruction in effectively using evidence-based research to improve a healthcare environment. Core courses cover the critical components of healthcare facilities design planning. Learn excellence in change leadership, stakeholder management, and strategic alignment with organizational goals. Create your strategic plan and execute and assess it by using data to gauge impact. Learn some of the critical skills you need to lead your project to success or dive deeper to interpret technical facility design plans.

In this certificate program, you’ll explore best practices for service excellence at senior living facilities. Through examination of case studies and industry regulations, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the current senior living landscape. You'll have the opportunity to utilize the principles of environmental psychology to plan senior living facilities that support health and wellness through informed design. You’ll implement the PPO (product, people, and operational conditions) framework to assess the needs of an organization and apply industry trends to create food service operations that align with the needs of a senior living facility. Throughout the courses, you’ll explore how process thinking can improve your senior living facility by creating a process flow document and formalizing an action plan for decision-making. Finally, you will practice assessing the quality of a senior living organization, identifying areas for improvement through research and applying quality management approaches.

Composed of senior-level leaders in industry from around the globe, Advisory Board members are representatives from Corporate Members. This diverse network collaborates with CIHF academics on projects and initiatives with a focus on integrating the fields of hospitality, health management, policy, and design. Advisory Board members participate in bi-annual meetings and conferences, as guest lecturers, speakers, and mentors to students, and as collaborators with Cornell faculty, researchers, and student groups. Membership provides a platform for industry professionals to connect, build lasting relationships, and collaborate across academia and business.
