Yogic Living Newsletter

September 2022 - Volume 2

Built into any yoga practice is a reminder to respect transitions. We unlearn the rush from one shape to another. We slow down and make time to sit still, observe, and receive. The same wisdom applies to the change of seasons, which we all find ourselves amidst now.

Just as we honor the pause between breaths, yoga teaches us to cherish the change of seasons. To bring ease and grace to this change of season, perhaps create a ritual, make time to journal, set an intention, or create a sacred space. This edition of Yogic Living is designed to help you transition the season with ease.

Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskara)

This is an excellent warm-up exercise before a kriya and is beneficial as an exercise in its own right. It increases cardiac activity and circulation, stretches and bends the spine, massages the inner organs, aids the digestive system, exercises the lungs, and oxygenates the blood.

Synchronize your breath with the movements to create an uninterrupted rhythm throughout the sequence of positions. Start by practicing three rounds and then gradually increase to five or six. When practiced with awareness, Sun Salutations improve one’s ability to maximize performance and enjoyment of all yoga postures.

Sa Ta Na Ma Kriya to Balance the 5 Tattvas

This is a variation of Kirtan Kriya that works to balance the five elements. When the elements, or tattvas, are out of balance, you will be off balance. When the five tattvas are in balance, you are virtuous, powerful, and attractive.

Set for the Nervous System and Glandular Balance

This kriya is for reducing stress and fortifying the mind and body to respond to change in a healthy, effective way. To begin, sit in Easy Pose with the arms extended straight out to the sides parallel to the ground. The palms are facing up.

Breath & Movement: Begin to move only your Saturn finger (the middle finger) up and down rapidly. Using a powerful breath, inhale as you raise your finger and exhale as you lower it.

Your Contribution Matters

Maybe a new teacher in Thailand is looking for a particular kriya. Or a lifelong student in Chicago wants a recipe for the weekend. Or someone who’s struggling in Australia and needi to hear about Seva and the solstice celebration. 3HO is for everyone, everywhere looking for connections to resources, inspiration, and community events as they engage in the path of Kundalini Yoga in their life.

Every day, someone gets on a yoga mat for the first or the thousandth time and uses 3HO resources — videos, posts, lives — to guide their practice. We are grateful for your support, as we expand our digital resources.
