LWV OPRF May 22 Week in Preview

Annual Meeting Packet

Our League's Annual Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 8. The business meeting will start at 6:00pm on the 2nd floor of Brookdale Senior Living, 1111 Ontario, Oak Park. Following the business meeting, where we will need to pass a budget and slate of officers, we will enjoy a light supper and then a presentation by Oak Park Village Trustee and Takeout 25 founder, Ravi Parakkat. As per our Bylaws, we are sharing the Annual Meeting packet of information here. You will also be able to access the packet on our website. Please RSVP your attendance so we are assured of a quorum to pass business agenda items and have a head count for the supper.

Helping Migrants in Chicago

Chicago has already been pushed to the max trying to find shelter for the waves of migrants who have arrived in recent weeks, said Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Even more migrants are expected to come to the United States in the weeks ahead, with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott recently reporting that his state expects to see up to 13,000 migrants per day. “It’s an overwhelming situation,” said Karina Ayala-Bermejo, President and CEO of nonprofit Instituto del Progresso Latino. “We’re gearing up, but the total level of preparedness needed is not there.” Yes, major immigration reform is required, but in the meantime, underwear, toothbrushes, and diapers are needed for those arriving in Chicago. Go here to see how you can help.

Sustainability Lunch & Learn

Join the Cook County Forest Preserve for a free Sustainability Lunch & Learn webinar on Thursday, May 25, to explore the causes of flooding at your home. Our partners at Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago will help attendees identify areas of concern inside and outside the home, as well as provide tips on reducing residential flooding and sewer backups. Register for this free webinar here.

Trailside Walk

The LWV Cook County Forest Preserve Interest Group is excited to offer walks in the woods. On June 28 from 10:00am to Noon, a guided walk will be offered at Trailside Museum of Natural History in River Forest. The walk is limited to 20 people, and friends of League members are welcome. Further details will be provided when you register for the walk at this email.

Update: Thanks to the members who visited the Good Earth Greenhouse and purchased $3,339 of plants that helped LWV OPRF receive $501 in shared funds. We appreciate your participation!
