A snowy Susanville around 1920, from a Thompson Studio postcard

On Thanksgiving Day

An Appropriate Observance Here and There

November 24, 1917

Thanksgiving in Susanville and vicinity was very generally observed as usual and the national bird occupied its customary place of honor.

The time-honored family dinner which plays such an important part in American home life, was much in evidence, while several different parties spent the day in other places with friends and relatives.

Among these were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bryant and little daughter and Miss ruth Glass who motored to Greenville and enjoyed the day with Mrs. Bryant’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Spring.

Another party to spend the holiday out of town included Mrs. Charlotte Cahlan, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Mathews and Mr. and Mrs. Hi Brown and their little daughter, who went to Reno by automobile and plan to visit relatives there for several days.

Messrs. Mervyn Spalding and Howard Doyle, accompanied by their families, arrived Wednesday from Reno, and spent Thanksgiving season with relatives here.

The annual community dinner of Johnstonville was held yesterday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Bassett, the guests gathered around the festive board numbering more than half a hundred.

The St. Francis dining room was the scene of another pleasant affair during the afternoon, a large number of congenial friends enjoying the holiday dinner together.

The table was attractive in appointment and bright with its adornment of autumnal decorations and place cards bore the following names: Mr. And Mrs. W. H. Neuhause. Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Philbrook, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Riddles, Mrs. Fannie Winchester, Mrs. Laura Bailey, Mrs. Frances Neuhause, Mrs. M. E. Thomas, Miss Ester Randrup, Miss Marion Jordan, Messrs. Howard McMurphy, Herb Swift, Ed Washburn, Georgie Hunt, Billy Walker and George Winchester.

A dance under the auspices of the Rebekahs’ of Standish rounded out the day delightfully for all parts of the valley, a considerable contingent from Susanville also attending, although festivities really began for Susanville with the Native Daughters’ dance Wednesday night and will conclude with the big affair at the Orpheum tonight.
