TOWNSHIP COUNCIL

ADOPTS 2024 BUDGET

Focused on their commitment to fiscal responsibility and continuing to provide a pro-active approach to government operations, Town Council held a public hearing for the 2024 municipal budget on Thursday May 9th, 2024 during their regularly scheduled Council Meeting. After a brief presentation by Township Manager Danson and having received no public comment, Council adopted the 2024 Municipal Budget that will continue to provide residents with programs and services necessary to effectively and efficiently run the operations of our growing community.

The $21 million plan includes the continued program of fully staffing our Police Department, the re-assumption of the Fire Marshal Office services, continued support to Maple Shade EMS, new hires in DPW, and the necessary funding to provide modern day fire services to our community. Additionally, the budget accounts for the continuation of all other administrative and community growth operations. An annual increase of $20.38 to homeowners with properties assessed at the average $161,708.00 is projected. For properties assessed at values higher than the average, the anticipated annual municipal increase is as follows:

$200,000.00: $25.21

$250,000.00: $31.51

$300,000.00: $37.81

$350,000.00: $44.11

The 2024 budget reflects sound fiscal planning and continues both Council’s and the Administration’s efforts of responsible government and good stewardship of the residents money, while continuing to protect the health, safety and welfare of all who live in Maple Shade

POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Maple Shade Police Department is happy to announce preparations for 2024 National Night Out are underway!

National Night Out will be on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, with a rain date of Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at Ace’s Field. We have a feeling this is going to be the best year yet, with plenty of new experiences for our community. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

The Maple Shade Police Department has been out and about in the community during the month of April. On April 18th, Corporals Robert Bennett and Misty Weiss participated in Maple Shade High School’s Career Fair complete with a visit from Officer Mike Pope.

This was a great opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to meet local business owners and discuss employment opportunities. Thank you to the Maple Shade School District, for hosting such a great event!

On April 24th, the Maple Shade Police Department and the Maple Shade PBA 267 presented, Gina Capate, from Toys for Tots, with a $1000 donation. This money was raised through Chief Christopher Fletcher’s year long event, Beards for the Year.

Toys for Tots is only one of many recipients of the monies collected from officers who wish to don beards during the 2024 calendar year. Thank you, Gina, for all that you do!

On April 23rd, Maple Shade Police Department’s administrators, officers, and office personnel attended the Crime Victim’s Breakfast in Mt. Laurel, NJ. This event is hosted by the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office to honor those whose lives have been lost or disrupted by crime.

On April 25th, the Maple Shade Police Department hosted it’s second annual “Take Your Child to Work Day”.

Chief Christopher Fletcher decided to bring this event to the agency last year and it was such a great day. It looks like we have a new tradition here at the MSPD.  Children were busy all day long, making crafts, solving crimes and decorating the parking lot for the officers.

Thank you, Chief Fletcher, for continuing to encourage such a great event. Special thank you to all of our staff who made this such an incredible event, especially Cpt. Weiss, Dsg. Wallace, Cpl. Misty Weiss, D/Cpl. Jeff Engel, Cpl. Brian Martino, Officer Justin Pike, Office Michael Maiden, Detective Diego Alvarez, Officer Matthew Shaw, Officer Anthony Marshall and K-9 Sitka, Officer Karenann Wortmann and K-9 Ripley, Darra Myers, Heather Capate, Ginny Woehr, and civilian, Tavia Weiss.

Some of our officers were caught delivering pizza to the cast and crew of Mama Mia, the high school musical, while they were hard at work getting ready for the big show.

Your act of kindness was appreciated Detective Diego Alvarez and Officer Ron Socha. If you happen to catch one of our officers going above and beyond, please send the photo and story to Cpl. Misty Weiss at Mweiss@mapleshadepd.com

RECYCLING NEWS

GRASS CLIPPINGS

Now that mowing season is upon us, the Township has received many calls about what to do with residential grass clippings. First and foremost, grass clippings should NEVER be blown into the street and left along the curbline, and especially not near storm drains. Clippings placed loosely in the roadway get washed into the storm drain system and may cause blockages that result in street flooding. Loose grass clippings in the street may also cause a hazard to motorcycles and bicyclists.

The Township strongly encourages residents to recycle their grass clippings as an alternative option to disposal. Grass clippings can be put directly back into the soil by leaving them on the grass after mowing. This helps your lawn, helps the environments and makes mowing your lawn easier and faster. The clippings can be used in different ways for fertilization, lawn care, mulching and composting. If you can’t use your grass clippings, try to find a neighbor who can!

If the above is absolutely impossible, then we ask residents to adhere to the following when placing grass clippings out for collection: Use a lawn bag that is only half full, this will allow the hauler to safely load it into the trash truck; please do not exceed 4 lawn bags per collection; and never place grass clippings in your recycle bin, as the container will not be collected. Adhering to these small requests will help keep municipal disposal costs down.
