This Memorial Day, click it – don’t risk it
Summer is just around the corner, and while travel plans may vary, one thing remains constant: the need to wear your seat belt. With this in mind, the Spring Grove Police Department today announced that now through Memorial Day weekend it is stepping up enforcement efforts to remind motorists to “Click It or Ticket.” “Whether you’re driving around the corner or across the nation, remember to buckle up every time,” said Chief Michael Niedzwiecki. “The ‘Click It or Ticket’ effort is about preserving lives. We want seat belt use to be second nature for all drivers and passengers.”
The consequences of not wearing or improperly wearing a seat belt are clear. In 2022, Illinois had 300 fatalities involving unrestrained passengers. Seat belts only save lives when they are used. Unfortunately, some still don’t like to buckle up. Nationally, it is estimated that 91.9% of people
use seat belts, while Illinois boasts a 93% seat belt compliance rate. The simple click of a seat belt can limit injury or save your life during a crash.
The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is funded with federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

J. Hendricks ad from 1883 | |
George Andrews purchased the land where 2110 Main Street stands in 1861 from Lewis Hatch. It was adjacent to the 40-acre property he homesteaded in 1843. It was noted on the deed that 36/100 of an acre be reserved for a building lot and a map from 1862 indicates there was a building there.
Ten years later, the 1872 map shows the property had changed hands. The dwelling was still there and the initials “J.H.”, for John Hendricks, who lived there with his wife, Johanna, and four children, Libbie, Sybil, Calvin (C.J.), and Frank. John sold Domestic sewing machines, bees & honey and property insurance, and was the Spring Grove postmaster from 1886 - 1893. In 1882 someone said “John Hendricks still says to his customers “here’s the ‘chine, here’s the ‘rections. You can learn to sew as well as I can,”. In 1897, son C. J., acquired the property through a quitclaim deed and sold it to Nicholas Freund for $1,300 the same year.
A year earlier, Nick had purchased the blacksmith shop at 2019 Main from Bill Shotliff and married Anna Freund. They had five girls and a boy. After Anna died, Nick got remarried to Mary May. The barn behind the house kept cows and pigs. Resident Elaine Oxtoby recalled bringing a small milk pail there in the 1930s to buy milk from Mary. Kids loved to go to Nick’s blacksmith shop to watch him create whatever metal piece was needed for the farm or home.
In the 1940s, Nick’s daughter, Lucille Blink lived there with her husband Vic and had a beauty shop in the kitchen. In the 1950s two May brothers, who were Mary's nephews, (probably Frank and Eugene), took up residence. It was said they got into a fight so one lived upstairs and one lived downstairs. A outside staircase, now gone, was used at the back of the house to get to the 2nd floor. Others occupants were Herb Hunley, Ralph & Martha Johnson and James & Sandra Pratt.
The current owners are David & Carol Rench and Matt & Becky Rench Johnson. In the early 2000s, David and Carol turned the bottom floor of the barn into their pottery studio and shop, complete with throwing wheels and a kiln in the back, and the upstairs into a photography studio, where they specialized in portrait photography. They also added a lovely addition to the back of the house with special details like vintage baseboards, trim and doors.
Although a house stood on the property since at least 1862, the current house is in the style of the American Foursquare, popular from around 1890 -1930. Township records state the house was built in 1912 but this date could have been an appraiser's estimate. More likely, it was built by Nick Freund soon after his marriage in 1896. It is also possible that the house incorporated parts of the original abode.
