A Funeral Mass for Colleen House Gizzi, longtime parishioner and faithful Cathedral lector, will be celebrated in the Cathedral on Saturday, February 18 at 2pm, with visitation beginning at 1pm.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

The 2023 theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18 - 25) is from Isaiah 1:17, “Do good; seek justice.” The full passage for the theme is Isaiah 1:12-18, lamenting a lack of justice among the People of God. Yet, it also promises redemption by encouraging acts of justice. Find a daily Scripture and prayer guide for the week.

Sunday of the Word of God, Path to Unity

January 22 is Sunday of the Word of God. In instituting this celebration, which occurs during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Pope Francis in 2019 wrote, "This is more than a temporal coincidence: the celebration of the Sunday of the Word of God has ecumenical value, since the Scriptures point out, for those who listen, the path to authentic and firm unity."

New Zoom Study of Revelation

St. Matthew's hosts a 7-session Bible Study on the Book of Revelation on consecutive Monday evenings, beginning January 30, from 7 to 8:30pm on Zoom. Register now and purchase the study guide.

Lenten Preview

Plan now to attend two in-person Faith Formation events in late February, and watch for the premiere of a pre-recorded On Demand series by L.J. Milone on the 14th century German mystic, Meister Eckhart. L.J. is the author of Nothing but God: The Everyday Mysticism of Meister Eckhart, published in 2019.

Lenten Retreat: Letting Go Like Jesus

Letting go - the ultimate path for Jesus' followers, as taught by Jesus himself - is the focus of a retreat on Saturday, February 25, 9am - 1pm, in the Great Hall, led by L.J. Milone.

Youth Mass for Life/Cathedral Schedule

Cardinal Gregory celebrates a Youth Mass of Celebration and Thanksgiving for Life at the Cathedral on Friday, January 20. Seating is reserved primarily for ADW parish and school ministries. Limited open seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis the day of the Mass. Note: No 7:30am Mass, Confessions, or Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on January 20

Plenary Indulgence for March for Life Masses

The Holy See has granted a plenary indulgence for the Masses that will be celebrated in the Archdiocese of Washington during the March for Life on January 19-20, including the ADW Youth Mass at the Cathedral (see above), and the National Prayer Vigil for Life at the National Shrine the night before.

Music at the Cathedral

Welcoming Fellow Pastoral Musicians

This week we welcomed the National Association of Pastoral Musicians for their annual Winter Colloquium, this year held at St. Matthew’s. We trust they had a fruitful time as they prayed, learned and discussed the role of musical liturgy in transforming our church and our world.

Schola Cantorum Openings

There are limited openings for experienced singers in all voice parts of the Schola Cantorum. Please contact Tom Stehle for an audition.

Choirs on Winter Hiatus

While our three choirs are on winter hiatus, weekend masses (except Sunday 7am) feature a cantor and either organ or piano. The Schola Cantorum returns on Ash Wednesday, February 22, and our Spanish and Contemporary Choirs return the First Sunday of Lent, February 26.

March Organ Recital

We look forward to welcoming Joy Leilani-Garbutt, Director of Music at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, San Francisco, for an organ recital at 12:40 pm on Wednesday, March 1.

Married couples are invited to a Wedding Anniversary Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on February 11 at 10am, and/or to receive a certificate from Cardinal Gregory in honor of their anniversary year. Register with St. Matthew's by January 19.
