Podcast Interview with Dr. LaQuoia Johnson
By Phil Tietjen

As a continuation of the podcast series we began last spring, this week we have an interview with Dr. LaQuoia Johnson who teaches in the Pharmacy Technology program. In this podcast episode, we talk about what inspired her to go into teaching and the positive impact she's had on her students. Most of our conversation, though, is about the exciting work she's done in the area of International Education where she has been involved with initiatives such as the Global Solution Sustainability Challenge, in which she worked with students from Jordan, Iraq and Kurdistan. I came away inspired from hearing about this work and I think you will too. Enjoy!

Flip For Discussions & More
By Amy Holmes

Flip, formerly Flipgrid, is a free, user friendly video discussion app that is also digitally accessible. Flip is a great tool to try as you expand your Universal Design for Learning strategies because it allows users to have discussions through audio/video, audio only, and typed responses.

Steve Maynor, Communication faculty, has used Flip for two semesters and it has been a game changer for him and his students. When Steve teaches Public Speaking online, Flip makes it easy for students to record and submit their speeches to share with the class.

New Globalized Courses
Globe on top of books
By Suzanne LaVenture

Congratulations to Mandy Christian, Randy Patterson, and Rachel Willis for globalizing their courses! Students can now take Mandy's HSE 110 Introduction to Human Services, Randy's CJC 160 Terrorism: Underlying Issues, and Rachel's ENG 111 as part of the Scholars of Global Distinction requirements.

Faculty who are interested in globalizing courses can find the Pick 3 Checklist and application on the International Education Resources page. Additionally, all faculty are invited to apply for a Global Distinction Curriculum Grant available from World View at UNC-Chapel Hill. These grants provide faculty a $750 grant for globalizing a course according to World View standards. Once globalized for World View, faculty are also expected to submit the course through the DDCC approval process.

Last year, Dr. LaQuoia Johnson obtained one of these grants for globalizing her Pharmacy 140: Pharmacy Trends class. Here is her completed project which introduces students to a variety of professional skills needed to provide culturally competent care to diverse populations, especially to people from the Middle East.
