2022 Pride Month Message

Dearest HFES members -

This is one of the co-chairs of our HFES LGBTQ+ Affinity Group, Hanna, here to say:

Happy Pride Month!!

And to all of our queer HFES members, I see you and I honor you.

I know we are about halfway through the month, but if your inbox or social media feed has looked anything like mine, you’ve probably seen plenty of “Happy Pride!” messages by now.

My intention in writing this message isn’t just to say happy Pride, though. Nor is it to remind us all that HFES is an organization committed to recognizing and celebrating members of the LGBTQ+ community. Rather, I want to prompt us to use Pride month to explore the history of Pride, get curious about others’ experiences, and reflect on and commit to tangible ways of creating a more just world.
HFES Partners Program Welcomes Nuro

We are thrilled to announce that Nuro is the newest Partner organization at HFES. Nuro exists to better everyday life through robotics. The company's custom electric autonomous vehicles are designed to bring the things you need—from produce to prescriptions—right to your home. Nuro's autonomous, goods-focused solution can give you valuable time back and more freedom to do what you love. This convenient, eco-friendly alternative to driving has the potential to make streets safer and cities more livable. Nuro has piloted autonomous local delivery for communities in Texas, Arizona, and California—for less driving and more thriving.

The HFES Partners program is just one way that organizations may demonstrate support of human factors and ergonomics as a discipline and HFES as an educational organization. This program provides employees of participating organizations with membership in HFES (complete with individual access to all associated benefits of membership), and elevates the brands of our partners to key stakeholders. HFES invites university labs conducting research and application on human factors/ergonomics to display a poster at our 66th International Annual Meeting in Atlanta. The purpose of this showcase is to demonstrate the variety of HF/E educational and research programs, not to describe specific research projects.
University lab posters may be attended by lab representatives or they may be unattended. There is no proceedings paper associated with lab poster displays. A limited number of spaces are available. Details concerning location, dates and times of poster displays will follow in a confirmation notice that will be sent by September 20.

Human Factor Prize Submissions Extended to July 15th

The Human Factors Prize was established in 2010 by Editor-in-Chief William S. Marras. The prize recognizes excellence in HF/E research through an annual competition in which authors are invited to submit papers on a specific topic for that year. The prize carries a $5,000 cash award and consideration of publication of the winning paper in the Society's journal, Human Factors. The award is formally conferred at a special session at the HFES International Annual Meeting, where the recipient presents their work.

The topic for the 2022 Human Factors Prize Competition is: Equity and Inclusivity Eligibility

Submissions must cover original (unpublished) research in the topical area and comply with the requirements in the Human Factors Information for Authors. Review articles are not eligible for the Prize. Any researcher is eligible to submit relevant work; membership in HFES is not required. Review of submissions will be based on originality, significance, sophistication, and completeness of the work.

The winning submission is peer reviewed and considered for publication in Human Factors.

The deadline to submit: July 15, 2022.

Call for Volunteers: Citation of Standards

Many times over the years, HFES members have told the Executive Council, both directly and in surveys, that connecting the research in HFES publications with practice is a struggle.

We seek volunteers from the Society to examine the educational resources that are available to help people find standards. We provide resources to get volunteers started including a report, “Getting Research Into Practice via Standards”. Other resources may be examined as well. Volunteers should select two articles from an HFES Publication (e.g., the Journal, the Proceedings and find the standards / best practices / etc. that are relevant to each of the two articles you examined. A sample reporting template is provided.)

Please consider this request to volunteer with HFES. We appreciate all of the help our members can provide.
