MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR

Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,

Our ingathering of gifts of time and talent is this coming Sunday. This is a special time we set aside to recognize the ministry gifts of every member of our congregation. Every person who participates in the life of our St. Augustine's 'ohana contributes to who we are as a spiritual community.

St. Augustine's is built on all the time and talents of people who have been part of this church since its founding. As a faith community, we also draw upon the gifts of our ancestors, as well as those of the souls and saints who gave of themselves to proclaim the love of Christ. And so it's fitting that we celebrate the gifts of all people, past and present, on All Saints Sunday.

Join us this Sunday in remembrance and gratitude!

Blessings,

Vicar Jennifer

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO

  • Kathy Matsuda for cleaning the church and providing flowers this week. Flowers are in honor of the memory of Kathy’s mom and dad, Takeichi Higa and Ruth Higa Toma.
  • Kim Lambrecht for serving as lay reader last Sunday.
  • St. Augustine's members who pray for others each week.
  • The many members of St. Augustine's and the community who help sort donations and operate the Thrift Shop.

KOHALA CARES FUNDRAISER SUCCESS

It was wonderful to see our St. Augustines campus so vibrant and lively last Friday night during the Kohala Cares fundraiser!

The event was a great success, raising necessary funds to help close the gap of food insecurity in North Kohala. We are grateful for the work of our community partner Kohala Cares!

PICTURED ABOVE - upper left photo - Lani makes a perfect hulu pua (feather blossom)! It's so much harder than it looks. Well done, Lani! Upper right photo - chart shows the anatomy of the kahili. Lower photo - Mandy hold a rough prototype of the stand that will be used to display the kahili. So many details go into the making of this wonderful art that will honor the ali'i.

KAHILI MAKING

Our most recent session saw the completion of the feather work for the kahili that will grace the sanctuary at St. Augustine's! After over four years of work (which included a gap during the pandemic), it's wonderful to see how close we are to finishing this beautiful kahili.

We look forward to sessions in January 2024, when we will finalize the assembly plans. The hui will also help us plan a ceremony to bless the kahili, so stay tuned for details about that.

St. Augustine's is fortunate to be the recipients of the talents and generosity of these master feather workers!

If you have information to share, please let us know! This is a space to help us stay in touch in a variety of ways, such as news, offers of assistance, or garden bounty (fruits, veggies) you would like to share. Please email Vicar Jennifer or Kathy Webb: VicarJennifer@staugustineskohala.com or admin@staugustineskohala.com Submissions due by Thursday morning for Friday's newsletter.

PRAY WITH THANKSGIVING

This week's Creation Care tip requires no outside effort - it's an invitation to turn inward. Pray daily with thanksgiving for the gift of life and the creation – pray for the restoration of the planet and for discernment as we live out our lives to care for creation – seek out prayer resources for creation care.

Mahalo to our friends at St. Peter's Anglican Cathedral for this simple and powerful reminder.
