Hello Lions,

Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week. There are only six days of instruction left before finals so this is a good weekend to complete final projects, work on any missing assignments teachers will still accept, and study! Before opening the books, however, please take a moment to review the wonderful activities that happened at La Vista/La Sierra this week.

STEAM Week

December 5 - December 9 is STEAM Week at La Vista/La Sierra. Teachers organized a variety of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) activities to engage students and inspire them to pursue further education in these fields.

Monday

The Adult Transition students kicked off the event with a STEAM competition on Monday. There were three contests for the students to participate in:

The Parachute Drop

Lego Car Race

Airplane Launch

The ATP students were divided into three groups for the STEAM competition. First, second, and third-place winners were awarded to students in each group for all three events.

The La Vista and La Sierra Opportunity students got into the Monday mix during fifth-period Academy. Ambassadors representing each Academy class competed in three STEAM events:

The Egg Drop

Lego Car Race

Airplane Launch

Video production students live-streamed the STEAM Competition into the fifth-period classes and first, second and third-place winners were awarded for each event.

Tuesday

On Tuesday the La Vista/La Sierra Student Ambassadors participated in hands-on STEAM BioTechnology Stations hosted by Outreach Coordinators from Fullerton Community College. There were four biotechnology stations:

  1. Micro Pipetting - students learned how to transfer very small volumes of liquid from one container to another which is a critical component of molecular laboratory procedures
  2. DNA Gel Loading - students practiced loading and comparing gel bands which is a procedure used to study DNA
  3. Fingerprinting - students identified the unique features of their own fingerprints
  4. Microscopes - students used microscopes to compare and distinguish between different hair samples

This event was also live-streamed into the Academy classrooms by the video production team.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, students worked on and completed their individual STEAM projects in the areas of Biology, English, Geophysical Science, History, and Math. These projects were showcased in the STEAM Exhibition in the library. Staff members judged the projects and first, second, and third-place winners were awarded in each category.

Thursday

Thursday was the STEAM Symposium featuring guest speaker, Adrianne Jackson. Ms. Jackson is an electrical engineer. She spoke about how she got into aerospace engineering and shared her experience working as the lead electrical engineer for SpaceX's Crew Dragon which launched astronauts to the international space station.

Friday

Today, Friday, was the STEAM Awards Ceremony. Please look for the list of winners and pictures of the ceremony in next week's newsletter.

In Other News...

Another event that took place this week was the "Return to Your Homeschool" meetings for Opportunity and La Vista students who have made up their credits and now have the choice to go back to their home school . Over one hundred students who made up their credits will be going back for the second semester! Congratulations to all the students who made good choices, focused on their goals, and earned all their credits so they can now graduate on time from whatever school works best for them!

Finally, in addition to all their live-streaming duties this week, the La Vista/La Sierra video production students have put together another excellent episode of Lion's Roar. Check it out to see which student won a $50 gift card to Target for having perfect attendance for the month of November. (click below).

Enjoy your weekend, Lions. Two weeks of vacation are just around the corner!

For the 2022-23 school year, FJUHSD was approved to implement Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) at Buena Park, Fullerton Union, La Habra, and La Vista High Schools. Parents with students who attend these schools will not be required to complete a lunch application form. Conversely, FJUHSD was not approved for CEP for Sunny Hills, Sonora, and Troy High Schools. While meals will continue to be served to students at no cost at non-CEP schools, the District will be encouraging parents who may qualify for free and reduced meals to complete a 2022-23 lunch application. The District Food Services team is here to support. Please contact us for questions or assistance at (714) 870-2820 or by email at foodservices@fjuhsd.org.

Dear FJUHSD Families,

This past year may have presented a variety of difficulties for students and their families. Some of us, including our students, are experiencing fatigue in response to the pandemic and other factors. Some students are disconnecting (or disengaging) and may find it hard to motivate ourselves and engage in school. Before the pandemic, one in four may have needed help maintaining our mental health. Those numbers are on the rise and reaching higher levels due to limited in-person connections to people, places, and things that help us stay healthy.

As our district works in accordance with state and local guidelines to safely reopen campuses we know that the process is challenging and many in our community are in need of help.

If a student or family member is in need of support or are worried about a loved one, Care Solace can help students and their families find mental health and substance use treatment options matched to your needs regardless of the circumstance.

FJUHSD students, staff, and families can use Care Solace at no charge to them. Care Solace’s team is available 24/7 and can support students and families in any language.

If you would like to use Care Solace to help find a provider
