“ I must ask for permission (for my grandson) to pay to you his personal respects. Like other young people, he wishes to be able...to recount to those around him what he has heard and learnt of the Heroic age preceding his birth, and which of the Argonauts particularly he was in time to have seen.”

Last Letter from Thomas Jefferson to John Adams, 25 March 1826
In this letter to John Adams, Thomas Jefferson asked permission for his grandson, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, to meet Adams. He also compared his and Adams’s roles in the American Revolution as similar to the Argonauts in Greek Mythology, see quote. He closed: “My solicitude for your health by enabling him to bring me a favorable account of it. mine is but indifferent, but not so my friendship and respect for you.”

The Seven Series of MHS Seminars
MHS Seminars bring together a diverse group of scholars and members of the public to discuss works-in-progress from both rising and senior researchers. After brief remarks from the author and an assigned commentator, the discussion is opened to the floor. All programs will either be hybrid or entirely virtual this season. Attendance is free although registration is required in order to receive the paper under discussion 24 hours in advance of the program. Interested parties may also purchase a $25 subscription to receive advanced access to all seminar papers this season. Learn more about each series by clicking on the links below.
*This series looks at already published works.
