The Bridge

Bridge Is Formally Named
At its last meeting, the Board approved a resolution to formally name the Village’s historic covered bridge. It will henceforth be known as the ‘Robert Parker Coffin Bridge’. Robert Parker Coffin served more than 20 years as the Long Grove village president and then
served 22 years on the Village’s Plan Commission. An architect by trade, he designed the bridge’s cover, which was added in 1972 to protect it from the elements. The naming of the bridge in his honor serves to demonstrate the community’s ongoing appreciation for his more than four decades of public service.

‘Greenway’ Corridor Proposal Under Review
The Midwest Sustainability Group serves as an advisor to the Village of Long Grove on issues related to livability and sustainability. As part of its work, it serves as a member of the Green Corridor Coalition. This advocacy alliance of concerned citizens and environmental organizations, which includes Openlands, The Sierra Club, Lake County Audubon, and Friends of Indian Creek Wetlands, has been working together for more than six years. The Coalition’s efforts were first, to stop the Rt. 53/120 tollway extension, with its focus now on protecting the valuable and regionally significant open space in the corridor.

The Coalition is proposing to permanently protect the land once reserved for the defunct Route 53 extension, preserving it and the adjoining open space – known as a ‘Greenway’ – as a nature trail. Doing so would further add luster to the Village’s aesthetics and foster opportunities for eco-tourism. The plan, which is currently under review by a State of Illinois task force, would convert the 12.5-mile former Route 53 corridor into what advocates have described as an ‘emerald ribbon’ of open spaces, wildlife habitat, and recreational amenities all linked by a non-motorized path for hiking and biking.

Village President Jacob sits on the task force, which is expected to complete a report on its recommendations later this year. The State owns more than 60% of the land that would comprise the Greenway, providing an existing structure for the concept. The Village has been joined by Deer Park, Hawthorn Woods, Kildeer, Mundelein, and Grayslake in urging the State to embrace this idea.

The proposed Greenway would not only harmonize with the existing character of the Village, but it would ensure that wetlands and other environmental resources instrumental to flood protection and water quality remain intact. Meanwhile, the habitat that flourishes within the corridor would give neighboring residents and visitors an opportunity to savor some of the most idyllic remnants of Lake County’s natural heritage.

Summer Safety Reminders

It's finally summer! While there is fun to be had, warm temperatures and seasonal activities also can present some dangerous situations. Summer safety tips include wearing light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, remaining in air-conditioning when possible, limiting outdoor activities to evening hours, wearing sunscreen, and keeping hydrated. Also, never leave children or pets in cars - even with the windows open.

Going for a swim? Monitor local weather conditions, pay attention to warning signs/flags, keep a constant watch on children, and never swim alone. When temperatures rise, monitor those who are high-risk, including the elderly or medically compromised. Finally, with the holiday right around the corner, celebrate safely with a public and professional fireworks show. Follow these summer safety tips to ensure a fun time is had by all!
