Elder Guyaushk's latest creation

Submitted by Red Cliff Elder Guyaushk (Jim Pete)

MY LATEST CREATION….came from an inspiration of a Mindimooyehn (Old Lady) or Nokomis (Grandmother) that was dancing. Someone posted a video on Facebook the other day, and this beautiful Elder was Jingle Dress dancing. Her dress was a sky blue and she had a totally white head of hair. I am guessing she was about 85 years old, but, was so graceful.

As I begin making this figure….I was originally going to make the figure like this Mindimooyehn, but, didn’t feel that was right.

So, I just let my thoughts go with the flow, made changes here and there, and came up with this figure. At this point, she doesn’t have a (an Indian/Spirit) name, or a story. Also, as I continued with the setting, I included her Oneida Niece, that is represented by the Corn Husk Doll.

You will note there are no facial figures, in the work that I do. It is from a teaching of not having facial figures shown, as it might "capture" the soul of an individual.

But, a Chi Mii Gwech (Big Thank You) for all the Mindimooyehn/Nokomis that are just naturally and quietly out there….sharing their knowledge, wisdom, and beauty!

Mii Gwech!

Timber Wolf Alliance Ecology and Conservation Weekend

The Timber Wolf Alliance (TWA) is hosting its annual Wolf Ecology and Conservation Weekend August 19–21, 2022 at the Forest Lodge Educational Campus on Lake Namekagon in northern Wisconsin. Participants will spend time in the classroom and in the field surveying wolf pack territories.

Timber Wolf Alliance Chair Adrian Wydeven, TWA Advisory Council members, and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) staff will teach about wolf ecology, monitoring techniques, and the latest wolf issues from biologists and educators immersed in this field. Participants will assist with wolf howling surveys and learn techniques in wolf tracking and radio telemetry.

The Wolf Ecology and Conservation Weekend is open to any student or adult interested in wolves and experiencing them in the wild. Participants will complete the ecology requirements for a Volunteer Carnivore Tracker certification through the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to assist with winter wolf counts and summer howling surveys in Wisconsin. There is also an opportunity to join TWA’s Speakers Bureau through an optional training.

The Timber Wolf Alliance’s Speakers Bureau is an opportunity for volunteers to help educate others about wolves. The optional Speakers Bureau training is on Friday, August 19, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Forest Lodge. Participants will receive interactive training on how to present information on wolf issues in an engaging, entertaining way.

This program takes place at Forest Lodge, a unique and historic estate nestled among 872 acres of majestic forest on pristine Lake Namekagon in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The old growth forest and serene water is sure to awaken your senses and rejuvenate you. A limited number of participants can opt to stay at Forest Lodge, though participants can also commute or find lodging in the area independently.

Registration is open until August 5 and can be found under ‘Events’ at www.northland.edu/twa.

The Timber Wolf Alliance (TWA) is committed to investigating the facts and relies on research to dispel myths and unfounded fears associated with wolves. TWA provides training in wolf biology and ecology, develops and disseminates educational materials on wolves, and supports volunteers to help with wolf monitoring efforts. The Timber Wolf Alliance is a program of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Harm Reduction - Keep our Community "SAFE"
Saving lives from HIV and Hepatitis C requires aggressive strategies to reach people at high risk. The purpose of the Red Cliff SAFE Program is to help reduce harm from risky behaviors.

The SAFE Program is operated out of the Red Cliff Community Health Center. This program is available to all members of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa as well as surrounding communities. Individuals can access clean syringes, sharps containers, sterile water, antibiotic cream, alcohol wipes, and condoms. By improving access to these materials, we help people who inject heroin, meth, and other drugs to reduce their risk of contracting HIV and Hepatitis C.

In addition, the Red Cliff Community Health Center now offers Narcan. Narcan is for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. When you come in for our needle exchange, you can request a dose(s) of Narcan at no charge to you.

If you or a loved one are at risk for HIV or Hepatitis C, we will never judge you or your behaviors. You can access the services by simply stopping at the health center reception and asking for the SAFE Program. The services are provided within the health center setting and are completely confidential.

The goal is to expand sites within the next year. The current services are available Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm except holidays. You can get more information by calling (715) 779-3707.
NARCAN Training Available
Have you been trained and are looking to get a refresher or are you looking to get trained in the use of NARCAN?

It only takes 30 minutes to learn how to save someone from an overdose.

Do you own a business in Red Cliff and want to get trained? A training for you and your employees can be arranged.
