Did you know that nearly 25% of New Jersey’s population is over the age of 60?
That figure is growing.
Older adults in our state have a particular set of needs, and we are the only nonprofit organization in NJ dedicated to addressing them.
As NJAAW celebrates 25 years, consider making a gift to keep our mission going for years to come. We appreciate your support!

November is the Month to
Recognize Caregivers
|
November recognizes two important issues that go hand -in-hand: it is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and Family Caregivers Month. In NJ, over one million people are unpaid caregivers for family members, neighbors and friends. That's 11% of our population! Over 250,000 of these are caregivers to someone with Alzheimers.
As former First Lady, Roslyn Carter said, “There are only four kinds of people in the world
- those who have been caregivers,
- those who are currently caregivers,
- those who will be caregivers, and
- those who will need caregivers.”
and let us know of listings we should add.
Check out the events and information from the Alzheimer's Association Greater New Jersey Chapter: https://www.alz.org/nj
And MOST importantly, thank the caregivers in your life, your neighborhood, your workplace. So many of us are doing this every day.

A Good Look at Eye Care
Some changes in vison are natural with age, many are not. Loss of vision can impact quality of life, our independence and our self-confidence. It's important to learn what can be done to help you maintain the best vision possible. Don't let the fear of going to the doctor or outdated perceptions of eye care keep you from achieving your best vision possible and fully participating in your life.
Learn about the newest technology and treatment for eye care with Dr. Tanya Carter and Dr. Frank Barnes of Montclair, NJ. As they walk us through the newest techniques for conducting eye exams, and a range of technology for low vision, we explore how much has changed to make eye exams easier with better results.

Make sure Age-Friendly Perspectives are Included in the New Jersey State Development and Redevelopment Plan
The SDRP, also known as the State Plan, is a document prepared by the New Jersey State Planning Commission (SPC) that contains a comprehensive framework intended to guide future development, redevelopment, conservation, preservation, and restoration efforts in the state.
In 2001, New Jersey was among the first states to implement a holistic, comprehensive plan. Since then, our understanding of climate change, environmental justice, and how to balance our goals in those areas with healthy and equitable economic growth has deepened. In addition, as demographics within NJ shift to an older population, it is imperative that an age-friendly lens is included in this important work to identify projects, surveys, initiatives, and opportunities.
And for a refresher on the 8 domains of age-friendly communities, take a look at the 8-piece series NJAAW shared in fall of 2021: Exploring AF Domains

Tuesday, November 28
11am - noon

Join us to learn how to advocate for ADU ordinances in your town, and foster the growth of ADUs once passed.
Speakers include Zoe Baldwin and Christine Kata from Regional Plan Association and Ann Lippel from Montclair Gateway to Aging in Place.
