American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month
November is National Native American Heritage Month. It is a time to honor the sovereignty, traditions, languages, resilience, and land stewardship practices of American Indian tribal nations. It is also an opportunity to recognize ARC's ongoing relationship with local tribal nations and to consider how Sacramento history is the story of land dispossession, genocide, and harmful policies. It is a time to acknowledge the realities and lived experiences of present-day tribal citizens not only in this region but also across the United States.
ARC Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge the land which we occupy today as the traditional home of the Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok tribal nations. These sovereign people have been the caretakers of this land since time immemorial. Despite centuries of genocide and occupation the Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok continue as vibrant and resilient tribes and bands, both Federally recognized and unrecognized. We take this opportunity to acknowledge the generations that have gone before as well as the present-day Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok people.
This month and throughout the year, we are committed to honoring tribal sovereignty and to continuing our work to establish and maintain legal and ethical relationships with local tribal nations. We also voice support for our American Indian/Alaskan Native students and employees.
