Volunteers Needed

Welcome back to school, Parents! One way to support our school through Rockwell PTA is to volunteer your time. No experience is needed. Make sure that you are ready to volunteer before school starts by filling out a LWSD Volunteer Application here or checking your status AND showing proof of your COVID vaccination in our school office. Your volunteer status will expire after 2 years, at which time you will receive an email notice from the district to renew.

Our most urgent Volunteering needs are for:

  • Back to School Picnic Chair: This person will work with VP of Events to find food trucks to provide food, coordinate any ticket sales and recruit volunteers for set-up and clean-up. Time commitment: 2 hours per week in August and September.
  • Helping Hands Volunteers: Parents are needed for 30-minute time slots in the morning and at dismissal of the first few days of school to help kids get off buses and get to the right classroom, and at dismissal get back on the right bus. School will provide volunteers with lists and a system to get the kids to the right place. Sign Up Here
  • Kindergarten and New Family Playdate Co-Chairs: We are looking for a couple of experienced Rockwell parents (perhaps of kids in older grades) that can attend one or both of the playdates on Wednesday. August 31st at 11:00AM and 7:00PM to greet new families and answer any general questions new families may have about Rockwell. Time commitment: 1-2 hours of 8/31/22.
  • Math Challenge Co-Chair: We are looking for one person to help with the Math Challenge program for the school year. There are 15 math challenges throughout the year. This co-chair will work with the other co-chair to submit the Math Challenge articles to the Bugle, correct submissions each week and award prizes. Time commitment: 2 hours per week in September and 1 hour per week October - May.
  • Yearbook Photographers: Help capture photos for the yearbook! You don't need a fancy camera - a smart phone camera will do just fine. This is super flexible - you can sign up to cover as few or many events as you wish. Time Commitment: Flexible. Dependent on event sign up.

Other short-term volunteer opportunities for roles like Recess Wranglers and Lunch Room Helpers will be posted closer to the start of school. If you can fill one of the roles above, please email president@normanrockwellpta.org. Thank you for helping!
Community Serve Day - Thank you!

A BIG thank you to all of you for a fabulous day yesterday! We had a LOT of work to do, and a lot of sweat and hard labor went into helping our beloved Rockwell staff get ready for another great school year!

We had 78 volunteers show up!

  • We were able to help 11 teachers and staff members in their classrooms and in the office -- a HUGE feat!
  • We were able to get that HUGE e-prep container cleaned out and organized
  • We got the map in back painted
  • We got play structures and blacktop areas pressure washed
  • We got a lot of the grounds cleaned up and raked
  • And we moved and raked A LOT of sand and mulch in our kids' favorite play areas as well as in front of the school - a massive task!

And now for THANK YOU:

  • Thank you again to Northshore Community Church for organizing and providing materials for Community Serve Day -- and for all the snack to keep us going!
  • Thank you to the Rockwell PTA for lunch!
  • Thank you to Blazing Bagels for generously donating bagel bites to keep us moving all day!
  • Thank you Mr. Clark and Ms. Gallagher for EVERYTHING you do for our school community -- it was great to see you out there sweating alongside us all!
  • Thank you VOLUNTEERS! None of this is possible without you all! We had volunteers from Rockwell families old and new, community members, and members from the Northshore church. THANK YOU!

A few items for follow up:

  • Tools left over: We had a few tools left over that were not claimed. We left them at the front of the school next to the purple bench by the office doors.
  • Missing shovel: One of our volunteers couldn't find their shovel at the end of the day. It was a new shovel, labeled with yellow tape "Platon". If you happen to find it mixed in with the tools you took home, please email Cydney.
  • We found a local church who is willing to come out on Saturday to finish spreading mulch and playground bark as a service project. If you're interested in coming back to help, please email Cydney.
  • Employer Grants/Company Matching: Check with your HR department to see if your employer provides grants for your volunteer hours (Microsoft, Google and Boeing do!) and consider putting that grant toward the Rockwell Elementary PTA!

Thanks again, and hope you all enjoy the last couple weeks of summer! See you in two weeks!

-Cydney Knapp
