Let me talk about two things: 1) Certain life lessons keep repeating themselves. I guess that will keep happening until they finally sink in. Case in point – when Jay Nunley passed away last Thursday, it caught me by surprise. I knew he had been sick. I knew he was in the hospital. I kept thinking, “I need to go visit him.” I didn’t. I kept putting it off, thinking I had more time. (...) 2) I'm increasingly intrigued by by Restorative Actions. That's the group that was designated to receive the offering at the opening worship service of the 225th General Assembly. (...) I will admit I was pretty skeptical at first. The more I think about it, though, the more I think it’s the right thing to do. Or at least, it’s one way to begin to address systemic racism. I’ve haven’t done anything with this information yet, but I keep thinking that maybe this is something that we should do.

Did you know the PCUSA publishes a monthly resource focused on helping ruling elders serve their congregations faithfully? re:RE Regarding Ruling Elders: A Monthly Resource for Serving Faithfully focuses on the call to ministry by ruling elders and the ministry partnership between them and ministers of the Word & Sacrament. Ruling elders have responsibilities in the life of the church, especially in the areas of leadership, governance, spiritual discernment, and discipline. This resource offers a deeper understanding of these responsibilities and helps deepen skills to be a better ruling elder. The monthly articles can be used individually or can be gathered around a particular topic.

“I’ll give them two weeks.” That is what Terry Layton said in 2017 when his own pastor, Roger Eskins, asked him if he would preach for Marsh Fork United Presbyterian Church. Their pastor, David Pettry, was sick, and they really needed someone to fill in. Five years later, Terry is still there. God moves in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform!
