Roots of the Liberty Tree
|
On the morning of 14 August 1765, the people of Boston awoke to several effigies of Stamp Act supporters hanging from an American Elm tree on Orange Street (now Washington Street) in Boston. The effigies were hung in protest of the Stamp Act. Later that day a crowd gathered under the tree and protested in person.
The Liberty Tree in Boston inspired other liberty trees and liberty poles in the 13 colonies which became gathering places for protest and celebration. In 1775, the tree in Boston was cut down by British soldiers. These root fragments were given to the MHS in 1860.
To learn more about these roots, listen to this episode of the MHS podcast, The Object of History.
