THIS WEEK'S

WORSHIP SERVICE

Sunday, May 12, 2024 - 10 a.m.

In-Person & ZOOM

“What Legacy Do We Choose?”

The original Mother’s Day Declaration in 1870 was a call for mothers to stand against “great questions” being resolved by violence and war. For generations, as women have gained political and social power and made real change, there has been an ongoing backlash against this progress. What prevents the full embrace of the ways of justice and peace?

  • Rev. Paul Boothby, Guest Speaker
  • Annie Lavin, Service Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician
  • Fantaye Kehm, Youth & Teen Welcome
  • Deb Reid, Greeter

Upcoming Worship Services

May 19 — In-Person & Zoom

"Protests, Demonstrations, and Marches"

& the Annual Flower Communion

Before major changes in history, there are often significant acts of protest. Such times come with risk. Back in 1965, UU minister James Reeb was murdered when he went to Selma to support Dr. King. At this service with Rev. Sue Browning, we'll reflect on the realities of groups gathering to advocate for change. In the spirit of peace, the service will include our annual Flower Communion.

  • Rev. Sue Browning, Minister
  • Kim Agee, Service Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician
  • Fantaye Kehm, Youth & Teen Welcome

May 26 — In-Person & Zoom

“Why We Build Memorials”

Our country has been grappling with memorials—who should remain high on our pillars and who should be brought down. But what within us longs for memorials? Why do we want to valorize admired figures and build them into statues? Together, we will explore why we need to memorialize our heroes as well as why we need to grapple with our own less-than-heroic (and perhaps downright sinister) tendencies if we are going to be whole.

Join us for this special service with a Memorial Day theme presented by Ms. Rachel Evans. Rachel is part of Duke Divinity’s hybrid program and is also serving as a chaplain candidate and 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserve. Join us as we gather together before summer travels begin and enjoy a special sermon to commemorate this holiday.

  • Rachel Evans, Guest Speaker
  • Annie Lavin, Service Leader

Apologies

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the worship service from last week (May 5) was not recorded. There seems to have been a technical issue that the Tech Team is trying to determine.

Discussion Leaders Needed

There are numerous slots that need to be filled for our informal Summer Session Discussion Services that begin June 1. Please sign up on the sheet provided on the whiteboard. If you have questions, please contact Nancy Holland.

Community Building — One Step at a Time

This past week, I received an interview request from Amanda (Andy) Strunk, who is a student at Washington College, which came in through our website.

Andy is writing a paper on churches in Chestertown and their presence in the community.

I asked her, Why churches? She said, "Well, we have farms, the college, a few industries, and a whole lot of churches in Chestertown. I wanted to explore why there is so much religious diversity in a small town."

We had a delightful 45-minute discussion, and I am hopeful that adding the UU perspective helped her have a balanced paper.

Of course, I invited her to come back anytime, particularly on Sunday.

Potluck at The Ramseys — Friday, May 17

The Ramsey family will host UUCR's May potluck at their 149 Bright Meadow Lane, Chestertown home, on Friday, May 17, beginning at 6 p.m. Come to enjoy the fellowship and please bring a dish to share. Please contact John Ramsey johnramsey1948@gmail.com if you have any questions or if you can help with the set up and/or clean up. Thanks!

UUCR Annual Congregation Meeting

Sunday, May 19

The UUCR Annual Congregation Meeting will be held on Sunday, May 19 directly after the service.

Submit an Action of Immediate Witness for General Assembly 2024!

Actions of Immediate Witness (AIWs) are tools any Unitarian Universalist can use to organize support for an issue they care deeply about and bring it to the Unitarian Universalist Association to engage other UUs.

An Action of Immediate Witness (AIW) is a statement about a significant action, event, or development in the world that necessitates immediate engagement and action among UU member congregations and groups. AIWs are initiated by individual delegates to the General Assembly that occurs each June and move from creation to adoption or denial in a few months preceding and including General Assembly.

The window for submitting AIW drafts is now open through May 26. You can watch a video overview on the 2024 AIW process or learn more from the UUA web page detailing the timeline and process for AIWs in 2024.

Gratitude Celebration honoring Rev. Sue — June 11

General Assembly (GA) is the annual meeting of our Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). Participants worship, witness, learn, connect, and make policy for the Association through democratic process.

GA will be held June 20th–23rd and is totally online this year (no travel required). If you are interested in representing UUCR in an official capacity, please reach out to M.Q. Riding for more information. Discounted registration fee through May 15.

Summer Solstice Potluck — June 21

The PROC Committee will host a special Summer Solstice Potluck at UUCR on Friday, June, 21, beginning at 6 p.m. Come to enjoy the fellowship and please bring a dish to share. Please contact John Ramsey johnramsey1948@gmail.com if you have any questions or if you can help with the set up and/or clean up. Thanks!

Pastoral Care & Connection

You are encouraged to share your joys and sorrows with the UUCR Pastoral Associates (see below). This team is a mixed group — but all have had previous life experiences and a variety of professional training in counseling and philosophy. Please contact one, or several of us, if you “want to talk.”
Pastoral Care Associates: Kevin Brien,
Gayle Folger, Nancy Holland, and Vida Morley
