MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR

Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,

This past weekend, Kirk and I attended the 55th Diocese of Hawai'i Annual Convention along with delegates Pi'ilani Fernandez, Maurine Gomes, and Kim Lambrecht.

It was good to connect with fellow Episcopalians from across the islands! On Friday, we attended two excellent educational sessions from the Racial Reconciliation Task Force and the Environmental Justice & Creation Care Task Force.

These teams are doing important work in our diocese. I commend Laura La Gassa for her work on the Racial Reconciliation Task Force and Lani Bowman for her work on the Environmental Justice & Creation Care Task Force. You'll be hearing more about both of these teams' efforts in the coming months. In particular, the Racial Reconciliation Task Force has developed a course for all members of our diocese. This is exciting and necessary progress, as we all continue to learn and grow as Christians committed to inclusivity, peace, and love.

Our Bishop gave an incredible address to convention, followed by a response centered on our baptismal promises. Bishop Bob spoke about the impact of fires, violence, and war and how we are called as Christians to respond; the response was a reaffirmation of our Baptismal Covenant, which included water brought from every parish in the diocese as well as water brought back from the Holy Land just before war broke out there.

Both the Bishop's address and the response to it moved me deeply. A video of his speech will be available next week; I recommend it to you and will share the link as soon as it's available.

PICTURED ABOVE - The font at our Diocesan Convention, filled with water from our sister parishes across the islands as well as water from the Holy Lands.

Back home at St. Augustine's, we talked about the centrality of our baptisms last Sunday—a topic I had planned before attending Convention. (View on YouTube here.) Here's an excerpt from the sermon I'd like to share with you again:

In a few minutes, we’ll enter the time of Holy Communion. The font is placed front and center as a reminder of our baptismal vows.

We’re starting a new tradition here at St. Augustine’s. Every Sunday, we wait in line, with faith and thanksgiving, to receive the sacraments. Acknowledging that our baptisms are the foundation upon which we build our faith, let’s anoint one another with the flowing waters!

At Convention this weekend, we reaffirmed our baptismal vows with water from every island in our diocese AND water brought to us from the Holy Land. We are bound together in these waters.

These waters come from the ahupua’a of which this church is a part. Running from mountain to shore, this ahupua’a nourishes us with spiritual food. We anoint each other in honor of those who have tended this land, in honor of the presence of God’s guidance in our lives, and in honor of all our baptismal promises, and, this Sunday particularly remembering our promises to:

  • serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself.
  • strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.

Let us say together: "I will, with God’s help."

Blessings,

Vicar Jennifer
