Weather Bulletin: Hard Freezes

Possible This Week as Cold Returns

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued a Special Weather Statement, warning that a strong cold front will move through the area late tonight through Thursday, bringing gusty winds, much colder temperatures and chances for snow showers.

Gusty southwest winds will develop this afternoon north of

Highway 50 and shift to the Eastern Sierra of Mono and Mineral counties overnight into Thursday morning.

noaaweatherbulletin image

This will impact outdoor activities, produce bumpy airplane rides and cause gusty

cross winds for high-profile vehicles, especially along Highway 395 and I-580.

Snow showers will increase here in northeast California this afternoon and spread across the region tonight through Friday.

Several inches of accumulating snow will bring periods of slick and snow covered roads to the Sierra and foothills, especially during the nighttime hours. Prepare for possible delays if your plans include travel through the Sierra.

Unusually cold air will settle into the area for early April with daytime temperatures 15-20 degrees below normal Thursday and Friday and only warming slightly over the weekend.

Hard freezes are almost a certainty each night, even for lower valleys beginning Thursday night. Be ready to protect sensitive plants and wrap exposed irrigation systems.

“During this grant cycle, the Sheriff’s Office plans to maintain our patrol time in our OHV use areas,” explains Russell. “The vast designated OHV areas and trails throughout our county has continuously seen increased OHV usage. Lassen County attracts many OHV enthusiasts from outside of our state and county.”

“The Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to ensuring safe operations and protection of our OHV use areas for years to come.”

Salt Distributed for Lassen Herds

April 3, 1950

Elmer Doty, Lassen County game warden, has just finished distributing nearly two tons of block salt in 50-lb. blocks to the deer over a wide area between Secret Valley and Red Rock. The project which took two weeks to complete, was done in a jeep which took him to places normally could not be reached in a car.

The salt was made available through Lassen County Sportsmen’s Conversation League, Mr. Doty said, and is placed out now because the deer herds are in the poorest condition of the year. They cannot get enough of the essential salt from natural licks because they are too few in this area.

While the deer in this particular area are in poor shape, those in the territory beyond Doyle are in a worse condition, Mr. Doty said.
