Connect - Hawaii Church of God strives to connect the churches to each other, the church with the community and the community to Christ
Bishop Rob and Candie Taylor

Entering a new year is a natural time to think about the future. Many people make their list of New Year’s Resolutions and work hard to make changes they feel will enhance their lives. As pastors and ministry leaders we should take this tradition as an opportunity to evaluate and cast vision of a preferred future for our churches and ministries.

If you are wondering where to start, a recent study provides great insight. The study determined that there are three common factors in almost every healthy and growing church. Interestingly, these three common factors are present in healthy growing churches regardless of varying cultures and contexts. The three factors are:

  1. Sunday AM Worship done with excellence. This does not mean it is done like someone else. It does not mean that it is done in a certain style. It does mean that the worship gathering is done to the best of the ability of the individual church. It is vital to be the best we can be.
  2. Small groups of some type in operation. Small groups can be Sunday School classes, study groups, fellowship groups, interest groups, ministry teams, etc. Small groups are among the few truly effective ways to assimilate new people into the life of the church.
  3. Serving one’s missions field consistently. Every church is called to a community. Each church must acknowledge this reality and engage with the mission field to which God has assigned it. The church is not called to simply serve itself, but to reach out to its community with the life changing message of Jesus Christ. This service to one’s community must not be hit and miss, but a consistent effort to demonstrate the love of Jesus through its serving.

As we look toward 2023, I pray that God will help you realistically evaluate where your church is in regard to these three factors. I also pray for you to have creativity and courage to make the necessary changes to see these three factors in your church. Candie and I love you and believe in the calling of God in your life. Happy New Year.
Blessings,

Greetings from the Hawaii Youth and Discipleship Department. We are super excited about 2023.

Every Sunday after I finish preaching, I tell the congregation this saying, Don’t have a great week, Make it a great week. There’s a huge difference between the two. One is by chance the other is by choice. I challenge each of you to live every day not by chance but by choice. Choose To Put Jesus In The Center. Your attitude is your choice, Your words are your choice, and Your Actions are your choice, so choose. Make it a great year.

Yours truly,

Brian Whitelock

My History is His Story in My Life
As we enter 2023 with the rush that comes with new beginnings, it is the time to evaluate our message. There are people we know who are floundering through life looking for answers to questions they aren't even sure how to ask. As Christ followers, we know Jesus is the answer, because he was our answer. Each of us has a past, a history. The temptation for us is to share the depth and detail of who we were before Christ rescued us from our past. When sharing our faith, we must remember that our history is His Story. Remember to make the focus the work that Christ did in our lives. A good rule of thumb is 20% what I was like or what I did before Christ and 80% of what he did in me. Write the story down. Look at the message. Make sure Jesus is the center. Practice telling others. When you practice, you can be confident that you are prepared to share Christ. Share Christ. Someone will listen.
