Coshocton County Job and Family Services is seeking a renewal of a 1-mill property tax levy first passed by voters in 1990 to support children's services. It generates about $472,000 a year. It's renewed every five years.

Gov. Mike DeWine released the executive budget proposal on Feb. 3. “Gov. Mike DeWine truly is the children’s governor – the leader Ohio has needed to support our long-neglected child protection system. In his final budget released today, the Governor once again demonstrates his commitment to children in foster care and to preventing the need for children services involvement.” Said Angela Sausser, Executive Director, Public Children Services Association of Ohio.

A bipartisan bill introduced in the Ohio General Assembly seeks to establish a pipeline from foster care to college or careers. The sponsors of House Bill 25 are targeting a population of Ohioans who struggle to get through high school, and therefore may not have the guidance needed to lead them to a fruitful career in the state after leaving the foster care system.

The existing Children Services levy expires this year. The new levy will fund placements of abused, neglected and delinquent children in Stark County.

The Black History Month Celebration Saturday featured interactive crafts and cultural celebrations from musicians, poets and dancers. The Mansfield-Richland County Public Library hosted Mansfield Senior cosmetology students for braiding demonstrations, bracelet-making with Mansfield NAACP, henna tattoos from Enchanted Luna Henna Studio, the Library of Things and Black history trivia.
