CONGREGATIONAL KIDDUSH

Congregational Kiddush helps us build connections that make KBI a strong, vibrant community. You can sponsor a Kiddush to honour someone, remember someone, celebrate a Simcha, or “just because!” At this time, we will only be offering a congregational kiddush on the weeks with sponsorship. For more information on these and other sponsorship opportunities, please contact Rena at (613) 728-3501 x225 or [email protected]
RABBI KENTER'S DVAR
It is interesting that the Shabbat right before Tisha B’Av, the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, is called Shabbat Chazon, the Shabbat of Visioning. It isn’t called the Shabbat of Sadness or the Shabbat of Destruction. It is instead a time of visioning, preparing, and dreaming for the future.

When things aren’t going well, it is easy to feel stuck and fear that things will always be this way. Shabbat Chazon reminds us, however, that a better future is always possible and that change can (and will) come. It is in those moments where we feel like all is lost, when we have nothing to lose, that we are able to truly try new things and explore all that can be.

We inevitably and understandably have many things to be concerned about in our world and in our lives. And yet, we cannot abide that this is all that there will ever be. We can and must vision what that better future will be. This Shabbat and every Shabbat after. That is what Shabbat Chazon is all about.

Masks Continue in Shul
Based on the repeated advice from Ottawa Public Health, KBI continues to require all people attending synagogue indoor events to wear personal masks. This provides what OPH calls "the safest approach" for protecting ourselves and others.

When attending a kiddush where food or drinks are consumed, please wear your mask when socializing or when standing at a food service table. Masks are not needed when eating, of course.

There are many blessings that happen in all of our lives such as the birth of a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild; the engagement or marriage of a loved one; or a promotion at work or a volunteer award.  These events lend balance to times of sadness, such as the death or illness of a loved one. We at Kehillat Beth Israel are grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with you - to be a source of community in both times of celebration and times of sorrow.

And in the spirit of gratitude, we also take this opportunity to thank the members of our community for their charitable gifts to the synagogue. We could not do the important work that we do at Kehillat Beth Israel without your generous support. We are so thankful for your continued contributions that allow us to grow and thrive. Todah Rabbah!
