Happy Sunday, Lions!

I hope everyone is having a restful and relaxing extended weekend.  I know the staff and I are making the most of the extra day that has come with it being Labor Day.

I wanted to take a minute to brag about our staff and students.  Something took place on Tuesday that had me leaving school grinning ear to ear.

The shortened version of the story is that we had a visitor spend the day with us from the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET).  She spent the day meeting with our staff and observing in our classrooms.  The instructions for the staff were clear, "Do not do anything different just because we have a visitor who will be observing in your classrooms."  There was no schedule for her classroom visits, other than she'd be making the rounds between 11:30 am - 1:30 pm. During this time, she, along with Ms. McCray and Dr. Dempsey made the rounds observing.

At 2:00pm, she (our visitor from NIET) and I had our debrief.  I had no clue what we were going to talk about, nor did I know what she observed while visiting our school.

First, let me share her words regarding the staff:

  • From the moment I stepped foot into the school, as I walked into the halls, and from every classroom I visited, it's clear that Riverwalk has a culture of togetherness and support that you don't find in many places.
  • Your culture was unique in that everyone works well together and is happy to be there.
  • The culture is warm and trusting.
  • In many schools, all I hear and feel are complaints and unhappiness and this isn't the case at Riverwalk.

Then she shared her thoughts and observations about our students . . . . your children:

  • You have incredible students.  I didn't meet one student who looked or appeared to be unhappy about being at school.
  • The students have great social skills and are well behaved and compliant.
  • The students appeared engaged and eager to learn.

I don't know about you, but when I heard her say these things about our staff, our students, and our school, it brought a smile to my face.  I also thought that our parents should hear what she said about our students.  Parents, this says a lot about you.  Thank you for the way you carry the banner for Riverwalk Academy in your homes.

Have a wonderful weekend, Lions!

In Strength and Blessings,

~Dr. Compton

A Note from Ms. Carr

Greetings everyone!

I hope you are all having a terrific school year so far. I can’t believe it is already September. I have finally wrapped up all of my “Meet the School Counselor” lessons and now we will go into the real fun work.

For September, I will be reading Clark the Shark with the K-2 groups and talking about self-control and how to “Stay cool in school”. I hope they enjoy the book as much as I do and we will be doing some fun activities to go along with it. For the older groups (3-6), we will start talking about mindfulness and being aware of our bodies, breath and feelings. We will also talk about self-control and how we can respond positively to others’ actions and being good role models.

Girls on the Run starts this month (see flier below for more information). I am excited to be the head coach and get to know these girls better. I have to admit I am a bit nervous as well, but look forward to the challenge. We start on September 19.

Please reach out to me if you have any concerns or questions regarding my lessons and/or your student. Also let me know if you would like me to include your student in any of my small groups and the topic you feel your student needs the most help with.

I love input from all of you.Have a terrific week.

Hugs,

Mrs. Carr

A Note from Dr. Dempsey

Hello PRIDE!!

We have had yet another great week in middle school and ninth grade. It is hard to believe it is close to the middle of the first quarter already!! Will Durant stated "We are what we repeatedly do; Therefore, excellence is not an act, but a habit". All staff at Riverwalk Academy  recognize that our students are capable of excellence and we are working to build these habits. You can assist us in this process by working with your student to develop the habit of keeping up with assignments to complete work in a timely manner. Please look in the Parent Portal for PowerSchool and encourage your student to get any work done that needs to be completed.

We want our students to be successful and this is one of the best ways to support your student and us in this process. Progress reports will come home on September 7, please reach out to your student's teachers if there are any concerns.

As always, I am here if you have any questions or concerns. Have an amazing long weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.

Warmly,

Dr. Christy Dempsey
